Traffic camera

Has anyone paid the $25 for the camera Bmw app? Does it work on the m8s with the older software or do you need to update version? Anyone running it on a 11.2019.xx Bmw M850i?

Yeah, it just popped up for me, too. The small print says that it comes with a free three-month trial for "new cars." I guess that's not us.

I'll pass.

Just logged into the ConnectedDrive portal and its not showing up for me. Regardless I'll pass anyway as I get the same info for free from my JBV1 app on my Pixel 3XL along with integration of Waze alerts and control of my Valentine 1 Gen2 to boot. A quick Google Search indicates there are options out there for iOS as well.

Not available here. My wife’s Lexus has had this feature for years, free. She loves it. I can’t stand it, simply because we have so many speed cameras, schools zone cameras and restricted zone cameras and since the only Lexus option is a voice announcement its like driving with a narrator.

So if I use Waze in apple CarPlay, I don't need to pay for the BMW things?

With Waze it will only report a fixed speed camera if another Wazer has marked it in the app. Odds are the majority will be marked. However, there are other apps that pull from maintained databases, e.g., poi-factory.com which is where my JBV1 app gets it data from. Thus, with JBV1 I get all the red light camera notifications and get all of the active Waze alerts drivers have noted for Police, Objects on road, etc. in real-time given that it reads that directly from the Waze APIs.

The JBV 1 is illegal here, so I guess I'm stuck with Waze.

I'm guessing you mean the actual Valentine 1 component (vs just JBV1 which is a phone app) as radar detectors are illegal in Virginia. One has to wonder why it is the only state to hold out on them being illegal. For something similar to how JBV1 handles the red light and other stationary speed cameras you might want to check out Radarbot on the iOS app store (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/radarb...r/id1099797635) which touts to have similar features and a 4.6 rating.

yep, Virginia is strange. DC also bans radar detectors. but it's almost impossible to speed through DC during daylight hours, and most evenings. VA is one of the few, but it's mainly only the State Troopers on the highway (like 95) that will get you for an illegal radar.

Still, it's better safe than sorry. I'll try your recommendations app, thanks!

I bought it. It says it alerts you about mobile and stationary cameras but it doesn't work with the mobile cameras we have here in Scottsdale. It also falsely alerts you when you're on the freeway driving over or under an intersection with a speed camera. But it was cheap, it's just a popup in your heads up display without any other annoying noises, so I'll decide in 15 months whether to keep it or not.

I'm surprised that BMW would claim to alert on mobile cameras as their is no way their database on the back-end (which likely sources from poi-factory.com as it is the standard) can track them without the addition of crowd sourcing information, e.g., Waze or some of Escort's radar detectors that include a similar function. I too am here in Scottsdale and thankfully both their and Paradise Valley mobile setups are pretty predictable.

With my Valentine 1, JBV1 app which integrates into the V1 for control plus stationary speed camera alerts (sourced from poi-factory.com) along with Waze crowd sourcing alerts I'm pretty much covered. However, for those predictable spots I'll still ensure I'm at PSL +9 or lower as neither Scottsdale or PV will ticket for that.

Locations are predictable if it’s a route you drive regularly. I didn’t really expect it to work with unknown mobile camera locations, but I thought maybe with the way the car reads speed limit signs it could also read those signs that are always out before you hit one of those cameras. That’s not the case, so the service is mostly useless, time will tell if the permanent camera alerts will be worth it.

sounds like it might be worth it here in DC where almost every light has a camera, but then again every light and intersection has cameras.

Your best bet is to pick up a radar detector as it will call out mobile radar unit at least a 1/4 a mile away but generally a half a mile. I can't recommend the Valentine 1 Gen2 more for this use case as well as overall freeway driving as it is has the greatest sensitivity over all the others outside of Escorts Max Ci 360 which requires a complete custom install vs just windshield "suction cup" or under the rear view mirror mounting (I'd recommend BlendMount) for the V1 Gen2. I've been running V1 Gen1 and now Gen2 for 15 plus years now with zero tickets.

bloozemanAZ, I'm awaiting my V1 Gen2 on Valentine's upgrade program and it's possible that the thing will arrive during my lifetime (I had a very remarkable and unsatisfactory encounter with what passes for customer service there today, but that's another story).

I've been looking at the BlendMount and I'm tempted to order it. Question: How is your detector wired to power while in that thing? Are you just dangling the cord down to the lighter receptacle? Or did you buy and install the mirror tap?

Bummer on the V1 Gen2 upgrade but my V1 was at the latest release of the firmware so they initially didn't offer an upgrade so I just purchased the Gen2 outright. My plan for the Gen1 is to give it to my son as the Lexus GS430 I passed on to him last December still has the BlendMount in play plus the Savvy (and wiring) all ready to go.

For now I only have the BlendMount itself installed in the M850i Coupe and the Gen2 wired via the 12-volt plug in the center console storage area. Leveraging the flat wire from Valentine I have it exiting under the right "door" of the console storage and tucked underneath the the leather on the right hand side the overall console right up to about the 10 inches of exposed wiring to the detector.

I did purchase a MirrorTap but I'll either need somebody to blaze that path in an 8-series or convince my dealer to install it. This will end up in a more finished look with only 4 to 5 inches of exposed wiring being top down vs bottom up. However, the current install meets my needs so I'm just biding my time on the path forward for the MirrorTap.

Many thanks! If my stuff ever arrives (now, in addition to the Gen2 delivery uncertainty, the BlendMount is on back order), I'll play around with it and try to duplicate your install. Will advise.

I took your advice and put in a Valentine 1 with MirrorTap yesterday. If you look at this thread https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1656049 for the X5, particularly posts 19 & 21, that's exactly how everything looked and worked with the M8 convertible.

I only had to follow the first 2 steps in the Preliminary Work section to get to the wiring harness. It was a little tight getting behind there with the mirror in the way, but not too difficult overall.
