Start of Production for 2021

Hope everyone is doing well in these uncertain times.

Anyone know start of production for M8 MY2021?

Also - with Covid and all, what has lead time been for custom/individual orders?

Thanks in advance!

I ordered a 2021 M8 GC and received confirmation from the dealer that it went through. I think just the coupe and convertible are on hold.... That's what I understood at least.

That is my understanding as well given the 2021 ordering and pricing guides include the M8 GC along with the M850i coupe, convertible and GC. The key on the M8 GC is there are only 37 2020s on the ground now vs the close to 600 M8 coupes and convertibles. With any luck orders will be available once again in 2022 for the M8s if BMW doesn't axe the entire 8-series after the 2021 model run.

Same. My 2021 M8GC Comp build went through so we know we are definitely getting the GCs still. My understanding is that Comp and Convertible were axed for U.S. but available in other markets. I think production on 2021's started in July.

I haven't been following the numbers very closely, but doesn't that reflect a significant reduction in coupes and convertibles from one month ago?

There's no way on earth that BMW spent what amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars on R&D, tooling, and advertising on a car they would abandon after 2 or 3 years.

By stopping production of the M Coupe and convertible they are hoping to sell off existing dealer stock and hopefully create more demand for the cars.

Absolutely. The question remains as to whether BMW can recoup their R&D costs with only the GC, and the additional costs associated with offering the coupe and convertible concurrently. This isn't very different than the (late) 6-series experience, and unless there's another shift in buyer preference, it's unlikely that we're going to see any more large coupes or convertibles moving forward.

Personally, there is no way that I could've gone from a 6-series to a 4-series, and the absence of the M8 (or M850i) would have driven me to another brand. (The 840i was never a consideration, and it's interesting to note how little discussion there is about the 840i on this forum.)

That said, BMW's strategy appears to be working. In the past month, all of the M8 coupes that I had been considering are now gone. Potential buyers, make sure that your vehicle has the ZDA "Driver Assistance Package" for $1,000. Many of the remaining vehicles are early production and have the ZDB "Driver Assistance Package 2" for $500 which doesn't give you the 3D View ground cameras.

It wouldn't surprise me if BMW did just that. There is lots of companies that axe a car line early. And for BMW it wouldn't be a problem. Most of the m8 is modular and can easily be put into the x5 or x7.
I don't think they would lose anything in terms of "R&D" as most of their R&D is applicable to almost every other car in their line up.

Yes, it appears that about 100 have been sold in the past month and possibly more depending on how quickly the dealer feeds cars.com leverages to aggregate get updated. I know my dealer isn't the quickest at updating their inventory on the website after a sale.

From an outside-in view this makes complete sense. However, there appears to be some swirl across the auto manufacturers in regards to the longevity of large 2-door coupes in general as to their longevity.

Isn't it just for US markets? I think the Coupé and convertible are still sold in Non US markets.

The Coupe and Vert could also come back MY22 in early 2021. I haven't seen anything saying they are dead, just no MY21

That's 100% correct, but in my humble opinion unlikely. It's possible, but I'd be VERY surprised if they do. There is a host of reasons, but first and foremost they aren't what is selling like Tesla and big SUVs.
