There was a commercial segment that provided all the Satellite/WiFi gear to Boeing for many of their 737s and 777s. So if your on one of those aircrafts HON is the satellite/WiFi service with Viastat the network provider (think Starlink as the same but commercial only).

On a sad note Boeing killed off the 747s. They are still in use but no more made which is ironic for the potential destiny of the 8-series. I say sad as they were my favorite aircraft for long haul flights aka the 747 jumbo.

If I didn't have a United or AA frequent flyer upgrade to first class the top deck business class ride on a jumbo was top notch. Perfect placement as the front-end of an aircraft withstands turbulence more so than middle to the rear. So many miles of smooth sailing the skies on the upper deck of a 747 jumbo. 👍

Boy you ain't kidding. We flew the Jumbo 747 Dbl Deck quite often. The last time was a trip leaving Honolulu. Quick stop in Newark and then on to Frankfurt. About 20 hours of travel, and yes we were upstairs in the lay flat seats. I remember the flight attendants waking us up to ask what flavor of drizzle we wanted on our ice cream and sprinkles yes or no. Good times for sure.
I agree the 747 is missed as far as I'm concerned. But you know those 4 engines had to cost when they figured out 2 would work!

Recently I took an AA 777 non stop HNL to DFW it almost compared with the service and seats. Almost....

First or Business is the only way!

On a side note: I checked NetJets to get us to South Carolina.
1 way. Non Stop. G650. Just me and the wife and both our Golden Retrievers.
$190,000 each (human). Dogs were free!
Needles to say - We are on Alaskan first class lol!

It was a nice flight to Tokyo up there. Until then, it was just some mythical area that I only dreamed about what happened up there. Sadly, there were no dancing girls.

Of course then I hopped on a less fancy flight to Lukla, the most dangerous airport in the world. Thankfully I didn't die, at least not from the flight. The earthquake was a different story...

I was recently excited for my 787 flight from Addis Ababa to Chicago ,17h with 1h on the ground in Dublin. I was excited at the 787 part, not the 17h part. Each time I'm on a 787 I'm less enthused at the experience. Of course it would likely have been a different experience on United Polaris vs Ethiopian run of the mill business class. I can't imagine the experience for those crammed in the back of the plane.

Absolutely agree on the 747 - its internal space and overall comfort level, especially for first and business classes, are second to none. I always try to book a flight using those planes whenever possible.

Probably no surprise that many of us car enthusiasts are also airplane enthusiasts. I go back to the crazy first internet boom, flying Concorde because I just "had to" be at that London meeting, to my new favorite, LH's 747-8. Hate the 380, although the 350 is quite nice.

Indeed. One of the routes that I picked to Tanzania was specifically so I could try 787 business class and see if the lower pressurized altitude of the 787 made the trip that much less miserable. And back in the day when people were doing mileage runs I specifically picked a convoluted route so I could fly a 787. I think in one day I did Dayton, Chicago, Houston, San Francisco, DC, Dayton.

Sad day that they are not making any more, favourite plane to fly in despite having been on even Concorde

I have the 747 throttle quadrant at home in my garage as a momento . Although I will probably sell it in the near future as it’s not really doing anything.

As an amusing aside: I flew a bird strike program on a full motion 747 simulator about 15 years ago and was the subject of much laughter when I jumped and raised my arm to instinctively protect myself from a software coded pigeon!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

That's what killed it, i.e., fuel efficiency when Boeing and Airbus got into the efficiency war.

Yes, 777s are a good ride especially if 1st class as that's up at the front. Business class is great too if you can get in the first segment as the second segment puts you closer to the center of the plane.

Most of my International travel was always work driven (got to see the globe at Motorola) with always business class as a base or a free or FF upgrade to first depending on the year. For example when we moved from AA to United as the preferred airline part of that deal was a free upgrade to first for every business class seat on a trans Atlantic or Pacific flight for the first 5 years. 👍

Now that it's personal travel only get at least business class as a starter for the wife and I on United as Platinum for life so we often get bumped to first. Plan the trips out by the load and purchased seats to increase the odds of the bump.

Yeah that's a ridiculous no go. Irony as per my original post HON Aerospace supplies all kinds of equipment for Gulf Streams including all the navigational equipment, etc.

I've only done one trip on a 787 and that was after they worked out the original kinks with the plane. I was at HON and going to Shanghai out of SFO as a direct flight in business class via United Polaris. Definitely comfortable and top quality service but I'd still take a 747 jumbo any day of the week.

Ah the mileage runs to get to the next tier of FF status or keep what you had for the next 12 months, e.g., United Platinum Plus 100K tier. Thankfully never had to do them as reaching 100K back in the day of traveling the globe made it easy. But there was a year or 2 there when the continental US miles back and forth from Phoenix to Chicago wasn't adding up so just had to book a few trips to see the teams in India and China. 🤣

Never got the chance to fly on the Concorde so jealous and yes us car guys are usually aeronautical nuts to some degree. One of my mentors at MOT is definitely both as a stable of P cars plus two planes as he's a pilot as well. In fact he hits the Delta secretive Diamond 360 club annually as he's the CDO for a huge conglomerate and flies Delta given he's in the Atlanta area and that's one of their major hubs.

Delta sends him Xmas gifts every year. Mostly has been Johnnie Walker Blue but this past year they finally mixed it up with some Dom.
