My kind of request! These first 2 videos are with my recently installed Fi exhaust (OEM downpipe):

For this video you will find the clips about 1 minute in:

For this video there are revs and a drive by further into the video:

This is with the OEM exhaust:

Prett car and sounds awesome. What color is that?

M850 stock sounds better than M550 stock. I’ve read there’s only one resonator but I’m sure it’s a different muffler also.

No doubt that an aftermarket exhaust or just some mods to the factory exhaust will achieve a better sound. That said I'm happy with just the simple mod of pulling the fuse that controls the valves when they are open. Even in comfort it has plenty of grunt aka burbles and gurgles.

But for my daily drive I use Sport Individual with the engine set to Sport Plus (key as richer fuel mixture via the ECU), transmission in Sport (Sport Plus is too aggressive for just daily driving) and the chassis/suspension on Comfort (key for the crappy streets in the area). Pure bliss as cold starts even in comfort (Sport Plus won't make them louder) are glorious. Switch to Sport Individual for the drive and as the saying goes "now we're cooking with gas".

Off the top of my head I'm forgetting the actual name of the color (I didn't spec my car myself).

I really don't know if the M850i sounds different than the M550i. I've test driven the latter. Any reason that they should sound different?

The only reason I’ve ever read about is the M850 has one resonator plus the main muffler while the M550 has two resonators plus the main muffler. I actually removed both resonators and only have the muffler now. For $300 or so, it’s a good exhaust mod for the money and it sounds better. But not as good as if you actually go get a new system from Dinan, Remus, etc.

I’ve owned both, and pulled the exhaust valve fuse on each. Both had decent sound stock—considerably better sans fuse—but the M850 sound is better in each instance. Couldn’t begin to tell you why.

It could also be the way the computer is tuned. If the aftermarket guys can change burbles and pops and cold starts, then BMW can too. I think it’s be design regardless of how or why. The 8 is supposed to be flashy and sporty. The 5 is supposed to have that degree of subtlety.

Under the category of “be careful what you wish for,” I’ve pulled the exhaust valve fuse and, in my sedate, otherwise quiet neighborhood, when I start my car it sounds like the beginning of a NASCAR race. Now I either have to (1) start my car with the garage door closed (not sure my marriage is sufficiently stable to survive that), or (2) replace the fuse and just drive in Sport/Sport+ after start-up. Although the latter is eminently acceptable, I seem to recall that the M850’s may be programmed to start up with both valves open initially. Should that be the case, replacing the fuse will not solve my Talladega mornings dilemma. Any advice (aside from trading for a Prius) would be appreciated.

If it’s like the 550, you’re right. It starts up with both valves open. These cars have loud cold starts. But it only lasts 30-60 seconds. It’s like a crying baby - it’s louder for you than anyone else because you’re self conscious about. The neighbors will get used to it.

LOL, you guys really must not have heard a truly loud cold start before.

The cold start with my M850i with Fi Exhaust valve open is definitely increased in volume (as it SHOULD be!), but not really all that noteworthy. Certainly not worthy of being labeled NASCAR

That’s one thing I miss about my M850i. The M8 doesn’t pop like the 8er. I’d let off the gas at any MPH as long as I’m around 2-3.5k rpm and it’d keep popping, not burbling.

The M8 will burble and only pop on downshifts

I'm happy with the iDrive option that allows the engine sound to be in sports mode all the time and if I want burbles and Pops I can always switch it to Sport Plus.

When I test drove the M8 I don't recall if it does this, but one of my favorite things about the M850i is when you're driving HARD in Sport+ mode, often the first upshift or two are really harsh (in a good way).

And if you shift using the paddles, if you time it correctly, you even get a good thump in the back with upshift.

You gotta love drama. I don't know if the M8 has all of that drama (I only test drove it for about 10-15 min), but the M850i does, which is pretty good for what is essentially a luxury sports sedan/coupe.

Yesterday my son told me he got a 4/5 on his math test (I know, I know, he should have gotten a 5/5, but he's been having a hard time in this class!)

We were in the BMW and I celebrated by stopping in the middle of the road, flipping into Sport+ mode, and revving the engine 4 times. Great pops and crackles, my son laughed. A lady standing nearby was staring at me like I was crazy, and I quickly drove off

On the M850i with the flaps permanently open the first 30 seconds or so with the additional echo of the garage is loud as hell. That's until the 1st kick down in RPMs then still loud but not like the 1st 20 or 30 seconds. I always wait for the last RPM kickdown before engaging the transmission in reverse for backing out of the garage.

I'm sure my neighbors have gotten used to it by now. 👍

I had the resonator pulled last week on my 850i. It sounds so much better. It really is perfect since it creates no drone in the cab and only gets louder under hard acceleration. The cold start with flaps open is much louder but it calms right back down once the first RPM drop hits. My wife drives the car in Comfort mode and has not even noticed the difference. That's what makes that mod so ideal.
