Fobs stopped working 👎

I have a 22 840i convertible, today when I went to get in the car the fob didn't unlock it. I was able to use the app to get in, but couldn't start the car

I even tried the fob against the steering column. I changed the batteries and tried the other fob just to be sure...

Messed with it for like an hour, called bmw etc. 2 hours later it started up fine with the fob.

Of course service can't find anything wrong they reset the (PMC?) Just to do something I guess.

Has anyone seen this before? I hate that I am having gremlins already.

Do you store your keys relatively close to your car? We went through the same thing with our 2019 X5 where both fobs died extremely quickly. Replaced the batteries and moved the fobs further away and problem solved.

Yes, they are designed to go to "sleep" when stationary and out of single range of the car. My only issue to date is randomly (and it's happened about a dozen times in 2.5 years) is the fob allows comfort access entry but I'm stuck in the "guest l" profile and have never found away to override that to my profile. Also, when it happens it persists for literally 24 hours, i.e., no many times I drive the car it will be guest profile until the next day. Have never claimed it as an issue during service as it is completely not reproducible but just a ghost in the machine random event.

I've confirmed when they go to sleep they are no longer connected or using battery. You can also have it on top of the car and it will go to sleep. Easy test set the fob one the car or near by walk away come back 5mins later and you cannot open the door until you move the key fob.

I did a test with the X5MC, many had issues with the x5mc.

I had one that needed a battery and the other worked fine, I think it's like a lottery with the batteries they are using some are seriously just junk.

It could've been just the battery but what lead me to believe the range was that I kept hearing the car randomly preset ready to start (I believe it's the fuel pump) as if you've walked up to the car. When I moved the keys further away it stopped doing it. It could've been an early issue as it was a 19 X5 from the first batch of deliveries.

Could also of been an OVA update that corrected little things like that for sure.

Not sure if it is relevant but I seem to recall that all of the keys including the display key go dormant until they are moved to prevent them being cloned.

ALWAY store your keys in a faraday box or pouch. If you don't you run the RISK of theft.
The box will block any attempt at scanning your keys to steal your car. Never store your keys near a door either. Or in plain site from outside.
I also added a steering lock with coded key. And a ODB port lock.
Good luck getting my car you cunts.

Sure then you can wait another 8 months for a new one. If they decide your old one is worth getting you a new one.Or a settlement for less.
I prefer to keep what's mine and simply out smart the assholes.
High end cars are highly targeted in my area of the planet. Many are stolen nightly from careless morons. One guy foiled them a few weeks back and got them busted after they took it. Now he was a "smart" guy.

Anyone here who actually cares about their car might want to consider this. I did and it's the last place to fuck em before they fuck you.

I even had to show the BMW mechanic how to open it.

Last line of defense....12 gauge.....lol

Angry Can't Start my Car with Key Fobs

Hello All - I can't start my car, with my key fobs, nor with my My BMW app, nor bringing keys close to the steering wheel? It's stating the function is not active. What the heck is going on? The car is blocking the driveway. Do I need to tow the car to the dealership or have to do something to start the car? Please help as all dealerships and resources are closed. Thx.

Well I'm in Canada and after quite a bit of searching found out a Toyota dealer in Milton Ontario was selling them. I just drove down and picked it up. (70KM)
Not sure if this fellow is still there but here's his email address.
bbrum@miltontoyota.com
Or maybe call them at 905-875-1700. Ask for parts and inquire with them.
Yes I see Amazon won't ship to us...WTF eh?
I don't understand why these are so hard to get. Seems a no brainer in these days of high thievery of luxury cars. And any cars really.
It wasn't cheap but neither is my car. The quality is superb as with most German made stuff.

I ended up calling the UK number…guy was super helpful answered some questions I had, linked me a dealer here state side that sells the universal one. However, that one screws into the OBD itself and looks atrocious. I’m going to be emailing them with a pic for testing on the M8 cause he wasn’t sure. But he said he’d ship direct if anyone else is interested here in the states.

In any case, I think keeping it exclusive to a few retailers avoids thieves buying a few to try and copy keys?

Probably not related, but I've had different BMW keyfob suddenly stop working on me before. I can be standing beside the car and the fob just won't do anything. The fix was to give the fob a 'knock' against something (that isn't going to damage it) and then now it works.

In my experience just knocking the fob in my pocket will wake it up.
