M8 v M850i - Side profiles onthe Coupe
Apologies in advance if there is already a thread about this, but the one aspect of my M850i which I don't like, is the rear wheel arch.
Now I know that might sound petty, but it just looks like it needs to be lowered! I'm running 20s, so the same as an M8. However, the M8 looks much more aggressive from the door back. Is there anything specifically different about the M8 and M850i on the rear wheels? Is the M8 lower? Is it wider? M |

Get the H&R lowering springs which is supposed to lower it 1.2" front and rear. Gets rid of that fender gap and looks a lot nicer. This is what I'm planning on doing with my M850i.

I'm sure a spring kit would eradicate the issue, but just wondered whether the M8 comes lower than the M850i.
There isn't that much difference between the two, but it's the one area of the car that just looks poorly thought out. M |

Spacers are needed in the rear of the M8/850 to make it look right...

I agree about the grey plastic!
My relatively inexpensive solution, would be to carbon wrap it. Sure, it won't be as real as authentic carbon fibre, but it might improve the look! Someone good with photoshop might be able to do a mock-up. M |

I've considered that as well, i.e., a wrap. The detailer who PPF'd and ceramic coated the M850i does wraps all day long on all kinds of cars and I've been impressed with the work. So wrapping just the grey diffuser for them should be a simple process and something I'm considering during the lease vs full after market carbon fiber diffuser if I keep the car long-term. I wasn't thinking carbon fiber but rather something to match the Shadowline on the car. Great idea though on the carbon fiber so if I end up going down the wrap route later this year I'll compare what he has for that and a Shadowline match to see which looks better.

what's more interesting is the rear window profile of the two cars are different. If you put them side by side you will see the difference. I only noticed it at the dealership when my car was parked next to a M850i coupe.

Look at the trailing edge you can see the height of the rear edge is lower in the M8 even from your pics. It's so weird BMW didn't mention it

Perhaps just an optical illusion but if not the conspiracy theorists out there will likely claim the M850i's roof line's better aerodynamics are to help it perform without the gloriously upgraded engine, suspension, etc. in the M8/M8C coupe. |

Those apparent small and completely unnecessary changes to have two separate versions would cost BMW serious additional $$$$, and for what specific purpose?

How big a spacer did you add - and has it affected the rear steer at all? M |

It could be an optical illusion, but when I see an M8 parked up in London I'll try and spot the differences! But surely this would be a very expensive tooling exercise for BMW? You would have the 8 series coupe, convertible and GC - as well as the M8 coupe, convertible and GC. 6 variants, at a time when streamlining and lowering production costs is supposedly the order of business, would be extreme for such a small production run (compared to the usual numbers BMW is used to making with the 3, 4, 5 etc). The M8 doesn't have rear-wheel steering so obviously no concerns there. I have 15mm front and 11mm rear. I also threw out my Pirellis and replaced them with PS4Ss with a 10mm tire patch increase all around. |

For such a slight difference in looks, the cost to produce two separate versions of the rear glass window doesn't make sense
