what mods void warranty M850i GC

My indy mechanic asked me to be extremely cautious with modding my 2021 M850i GC for fear of dealer rejecting any valid unrelated warranty work outside of the mods. He asked me to hold off until expiration of the warranty to even install BMC air filters/wheel spacers..... Should i just contact my local dealer and ask directly which mods they would allow to maintain my full compliance for the remaining 8 months on my factory warranty? I"m a little taken aback by his caution, what have you experienced?

If you are worried about warranty, I recommend doing only cosmetic mods. Catback exhausts tend to be ok as well

couldn't i consider spacers cosmetic? i'm only installing them for aesthetics, isn't an air filter just maintenance? .... i'm not replacing it with a cold air cone intake or anything like that..... I wasn't under the impression that owners on this forum were overtly voiding some warranty compliance with some of the deep mods we see discussed here..... I was actually not even going to consider asking if i could replace my resonators with an x-pipe !

Asking a dealer is a waste of time. Most have no idea but will insist they know all. Just look at all the dealers telling clients that the run in service unlocks more power. Bottom line is no one can give you definitive answer. Lots of rumors repeated so often they appear as fact. Very little first hand experience. According to the law, the mod must be directly related to the reason the warranty is being denied. It sounds objective but can be very subjective. You should be fine but be prepared to pay to play.

I doubt very much that you'd be able to get your dealer to give you a list of what mods they'd allow that would not affect a warranty. It's just not in their best interest to make such a commitment in advance.

Put yourself in their shoes: Someone comes in complaining about an odd suspension noise or unusual wear on their tires, and you see they have spacers on the wheels. What are you going to do?

My 2024, M850i just went in for its first service and I brought along a Dinan Throttle Booster and a Dinan Dual Exhaust Valve Remote and was told upon drop off, those items would cause error codes and void my warranty. Even though I complained to my Service Rep, they're being babies about these simple mods and the fact that BMW has worked with Dinan for many years, I made no headway. The only mod they would consider acceptable is an "air intake" which I plan on purchasing from Dinan. I also reached out to Dinan and mentioned to them that my local BMW dealership said those products above could cause error codes. I'll post what they say when I get a response. If anyone knows of a dealer in the Clearwater/Tampa, FL area that's a little more lenient, please let me know. Good luck!

Again. Typical dealer nonsense. They have no basis for the crap that they say and they think they are smarter then the customer.

Magnuson Moss Warranty Act…

A service department or automotive manufacturer can not void your warranty simply because you have installed aftermarket parts or have modified your vehicle. They can, however, deny a warranty claim if they can prove the issue in question was a direct result of the installed part or modification. Unfortunately, plenty of people have stories of going to a dealership service department with a warranty issue and being denied because they have modified their vehicle. There are definitely shady service departments out there who will try to get over on their customers if they can, but this is illegal and it is up to the customer to know the law and stand up.

My local BMW dealer installed my Dinan exhaust valve controller no questions asked. It works great.

My dealer installed my Dinan exhaust. That valve controller shouldn’t void anything besides your exhaust system. Nothing cat back can realistically get blamed for any malfunctions.

My SA made me nervous, saying if I switch to non runflat tires that it could void the warranty on the xdrive system because they aren’t OEM, even if the sizes are exactly the same. So now I’m too nervous to do it.

That’s the most BS I have heard in a long time!! That service advisor does not know what they’re talking about. Personally, I wouldn’t deal with that person any further. Definitely sounds like a paranoid nervous nelly! Don’t expect that SA to ever help you out if your in a jam.

Seriously, lose that SA as fast as you can. You need to find a cool SA that knows what they’re talking about. That person is a complete idiot.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going from run flats to non run flats as long as the tire size is the exact same. These cars come equipped with either one. It’s also important that you match the speed rating.

That’s it. I’m starting a new thread in the Off Topic section - Dumbest Things Your SA Told You - to go along with my Parking Lot Morons thread which is dozens of pages.

He’s actually a great dude. He’s helped me out before. I think he’s just being overly conservative. When I did my resonator delete, he told me it would be fine. It’s just this tire thing.

Honestly IMO any change in Camber, Spacers and even tire size will change the wheel and axle angles and has potential of suspension or wheel misalignment but I don't think dealers know that or this suspension is much more reliable for small changes

While agree with you , still there is a secret for run-in service since Launch Control is locked before this service. I had them done this service last month and I can say they updated software for some reasons since all of my M1/M2 setting had got reset.
