replacement key fob options?

My 2020 840 GC only came with one key fob and the key card.
Are there any options out there to purchase a second key fob beside paying the dealer $$$$ ?

I really love the car! First non suv BMW for me. the wheel combo and sapphire black with red int really did it for me.

As a secondary rant- buying a non enthusiast owned car is painful. I can’t believe how little some people care for their vehicles. Lease or not there should be some level of responsibility. Car has 7,000 miles and I feel like it has more body dings + scratches through the paint than cars i owned with 100k plus. I am sure I am being concours judge hyper critical. It is my Daily driver and the interior is immaculate so not a big deal- looks good from 10’ and 10 mph

You can take your chances and attempt a replacement remote fob from aftermarket sellers…but make sure you understand (fully) what the remote fob does and entails.

There are multiple systems that the remote communicates with….and some are powered by the battery inside the fob, and some are powered through induction.

If you can find an aftermarket vendor that can retrieve the encrypted 128-bit that’s encoded to the transmitter chip inside the remote as well as programmed to some control modules that enable starting (EWS). Then you have the other remote functions that facilitate locking/unocking and comfort access.

Try Bimmertech as believe they sell fobs for less than dealer pricing.

Edit: scratch that as checked Bimmertech and they now have the following statement:

"Since 2023, all new BMW and MINI key fobs can only be purchased at the official dealerships. They are made-to-order originals and will look exactly like the one you got from the factory. This means they are delivered pre-programmed for your specific vehicle, to ensure complete compatibility."

I almost purchased a display key from them back in early 2020 for my 2020 M850i but ultimately passed as it's just too bulky for practical use.

Thank you for the detailed information. You guys are great! Looks like the answer is purchase through the dealer.
