Hi,

My car completed the following update version 07/2021.50 successfully. After the update, gesture controls stopped working even though they are checked in the iDrive. I unchecked them and rechecked several times no luck.

Any ideas what might have happened? Thanks

7/2021.50 just recently? If so, that's odd as BMW has released at least 2 updates since then via OTA. You should have a x/2022 or x/2023 update. Do you have an active connected drive account? I suggest logging into it and make sure remote software upgrade shows active for your car. You may need to do a dealer visit for them to reprogram your car to a current software version.

I checked again for software update and this time 03/2023.67 showed up which I downloaded on my phone. I will update the car tomorrow.

That is indeed the latest OTA and quite likely you needed the 07/2021 to make the leap to it vs what you were originally on.

So as I mentioned in the above post, after updating to version 07/2021.50, gesture controls such as volume control and navigation home stopped working. I parked the car for few hours then got back in and everything went back to normal. The latest version showed up on my iDrive 03/2023.67 so I updated the system successfully, the same issue came back, gesture controls stopped working, then I noticed by moving the volume knob I got the following message (attached image). The only way to get any radio station working is by asking Hey BMW play 98.1FM etc. but still the gesture controls not working. I rebooted the iDrive about three times no change. Today is the second day with the same issue.

Any thoughts on why this is happening? thanks

Not sure about the gesture controls but the picture shared indicates that there is no media input selected. Sounds like you had it on FM Radio but it still claimed no source. Sadly it sounds like you have 2 issues, i.e., the gesture controls not functioning and media source selection both post OTA update.

If rebooting the head unit 3 times hasn't resolved the issues then I'm at a loss. The apps take some time to download and reinstall after an OTA but that's hours not days. Plus, Gesture Controls are a built-in function vs a seperate app.

This is really weird... I get in the car last evening and all of sudden everything is functioning as normal. I'm starting to wonder now, is this an OTA issue or a head unit issue?

Could be and something tied to the OTAs triggering the bug/fault somehow. Out of curiosity what model year is your M850i? It looks like from the picture shared potentially a 2023 with the larger screen or is it a 22?

Update: Ignore as I see on some of your other threads it's a 2021.

That’s definitely a pre-2023 screen…

I’m going to check again tomorrow on one of my commute days, but after latest OTA update on Monday, my remote services stopped working. I did notice they were toggled off after the update, but I did toggle all back on and still weren’t working yesterday. I’ll advise after recheck.

Could it be that when the car states software update completed, it's still taking few days to really finish the updates? As I mentioned before, I had the same issues when I updated to 07/2021.50, gesture controls stopped working and the audio source message, a day and half later everything went to normal. The 03/2023.67 took a bit longer time almost three days before all functions came back. I bringing the car to the dealer next week for something else, I will ask if this is a normal process for the updates and will report back.

If you are taking it to the dealer next week definitely bring up the issue so they can troubleshoot. As a FYI, this is not normal whatsoever. The update of the iDrive OS is completed at the end of the OTA loader completing and the head unit restart.

As mentioned previously, the only thing that happens post facto is the re-installation of the "companion" apps, e.g., Drive Recorder, Climate Control Rules, etc. They are pulled down via the AT&T built-in 4G network connection and reinstalled in the background. This generally takes place in well less than 30 minutes and I just keep iDrive powered own after the OTA completes (the engine doesn't need to be running) to have that step completed as well.

Interesting. All OTAs or dealer installed upgrades (I've had them do it twice now) only have ever reset the remote engine start back to its default settings of off. The remote 3D View has held checked through all of them. So I'm assuming your experience this time toggled them both off. What was the OTA installed? 03/2023.x?

I didn’t notice any change, in fact I don’t think I will run another update again based on my experience with the previous two updates.

I just had 7/2023.33 dealer installed. Finally my Android Auto connects reliably and so far doesn't disconnect/reconnect a few times every hour of driving. Seems improved.

In addition to this, since new I've had issues with the steering wheel not always dropping into position based on my preset. So far with this new software, it's been ok. Hopeful.

The July 2023 software also has improvements related to driver assist functions. Claimed to work better in poor weather conditions and in direct sunlight. We shall see. So far it's been ok.

I alternate between Google maps and waze. Now that Google maps allows me to use the Google maps phone app simultaneously with Android auto, I've been mostly on Google maps.

I also use jbv1 in standalone mode so that kind of negates the need for Waze law enforcement updates.

I use Waze pretty much exclusively. Something I've noticed is that it used to be if I press the button and said, navigate to Arby's in Centerville, it would bring up a list of two or three Arby's with the addresses and I could pick the one I wanted. Now when I say that it just auto assumes the one that it thinks is correct and starts the guidance which is frustrating. I want to know that I'm going to the correct place. Not sure if there's a setting that's changed or what but it's definitely a new thing over the past few months I think. I'd love to use Google maps but I can't beat the crowdsourcing info in Waze

I'll take a look at those links. Thanks. I guess the AI is getting smart enough to realize if you are eating fast food you probably need to get your heart checked.

Yea, law enforcement is what I'm mostly interested in as well. I haven't tried the JBV1. I'll look into that

Also, did it auto take you to that cardiologist assuming it knew what you wanted or did it at least give you an option of several cardiologist addresses?
