Sudden Unintended Acceleration - M8 Drove itself into a pole

Hi All, I have been driving a 2020 M8 GC for just over 2 years. I love the car, but about a month ago, as I was pulling into a parking spot (head in), the car suddenly accelerated, jumped the curb and drove its self into a pole. Of course I was pressing the break pedal which did nothing until the car actually hit the pole and stopped.... The car has been at BMW Service for over a month now and they cannot figure out what went wrong.... Wondering if anyone else has experienced this sudden unintended acceleration with their car.

Only thing I can think of is sometimes when the sensors come in, the car makes a “ding” sound and a P shows up. If you accidentally press the P, the car can start moving suddenly to park. Maybe something like that happened?

There’s a recent thread, maybe in the last 4 months, regarding this issue.

I had that surge occur again on Saturday but when Im close to an object in front of me, Im all over that brake pedal like a fly on shit.

Thankfully my brake held the car but I can see this as being an issue for sure.

I had a tiny surge this Saturday while coming to a stop.. it seemed like it downshifted into first at too high rpm. Although I noticed it, I was already on the brake so it wasn’t very risky. Doesn’t sound to be your situation but just thought I’d note it

This was the post from earlier. Hope BMW sort this out quick. Not just related to the 8 but others as well.

Never experienced it. Any indications it’s related to stall prevention (whether correctly detected or not)?

Wow, so you are having the same issue but thankfully you have not hit anything? Have you taken the car into service to see what's wrong with it?

Thank you... this was very helpful as it seems to be an identical problem.... I'm still waiting to hear from BMW NA after they inspect the car.

Ed, this exact thing happened to a family member pulling our 2022 M8 coupe into the garage. The car surged forward on its own accord, colliding with the garage. We are certain that this was not driver error, and have noticed a few similar incidents posted on the forums. Has the situation been resolved with BMW? I am trying to determine the right course of action to take here and am very interested in what happened to you and how BMW handled it.

Is this a downshifting issue? On my M6 I have experienced similar things, its a little touchy if you come into the garage too quick and it goes from 4th to say 2nd. The RPMs jump - DCT?

On the original thread I received an education regarding the 8-series (and surely other series with similar features) reads a red limit signs. However, just like the OP on that thread and this one that is not a factor as both were parking situations during the "lurch forward". Thankfully my 2020 M850i has never exhibited this issue whatsoever. It does sound like it's not an isolated case though whatsoever given others chiming in with similar experiences although not resulting in an impact. So now I'm wondering if I'm just dealing with a ticking time bomb as to when I experience the issue.
