Oil specs are a minefield!

My car is a 2021 840i (EU spec, so has OPF). Am I right in thinking Castrol Edge 5W30 LL-04 is the right oil? Or 0W30 LL-01? The manual is as much use as if it were written in hieroglyphics…names about 10 different oils!

My trick of the trade is call down to parts at your local trusted dealer ask them to look up an oil change kit and while they bring it up give you the cost ask them what the oil information is. They typically just tell you and then you can buy your own from there. Sometimes that makes the owners manual mess easier to get through but all regions are a bit different and oil is equal as long as it meets the standards (don't let things get out of control with oil threads LOL).

When I see the recommended oil viscosity selections in my iDrive owners manual...it doesn't confuse me at all. I see several selections that BMW recommends...and when I go to purchase oil for an oil change...I make my selection based on any of the recommendations...and if one is on sale that's the one I usually purchase.

Does it confuse me...thankfully , no.

That’s an old idrive, not from an 8 series.
Glad you’re not confused, but there’s more than just viscosity to think about, as you can get 0W30 and 5W30 grade oils that do not even meet BMW specification, or a 0W30 that meets LL-01 or 0W30 LL-04 spec, and the same for 5W30.

Thank you for your valued input.

Here's an example from a g30 M550ix...the owners manual built into iDrive gives BMW recommendations for suitable oil viscosity...just select an oil with one of the recommendations and avoid the ones that says it is not suitable:

Ll04, mid saps, ll01 high saps. I think ppe 5w40 is good for a dd. It's very light for a 40 weight and a low flash point. Xcess gen2 5w40 for more protection.
