840 vs M4

I posted this over on the G82 (M4) board, but thought I'd post it here to get your all's thoughts.

I don't know quite how I got this idea into my head. I've been looking at the new M4 forever and coming off 2 previous M4's. I drove an M8 at the M Track days which was the first time I had seen an 8 in person. From the pics I'd seen I thought they'd much larger, like, way ungainly too large. Instead they are a sexy, sleek, svelte sport coupe, a look that the G82 seems to be hinting at and reaching for, but doesn't quite get there IMO. The front is certainly an improvement over the new M4 grilles, even though they are growing on me.

So for the heck of it I decided to do some basic price comparisons. A G82 would be about 80K with minimal if any discounts and a $500 BMWCCA rebate. The 840 is $100k with much more discount room, currently $3k loyalty and $1500 back from BMWCCA. I was paying about $1k/month for my current M4 (recently bought out my lease) after putting several thousand down (I know you shouldn't on a lease, but I did). I got an early ballpark quote on a 10k/year 840 lease at about $1200/month. I'm guessing that the new M4 is going to cost over 1k/month.

Plan is for a PCD around April 1st so I can drive it home safely after the winter weather is gone. I'll have to see how the deals are come January, but I'm considering it. I obviously get a smaller engine and a larger car, but it's never going to see a track and having seen the 8 in person it's a damn sexy car, where as the M4 will have to still grow on me a bit which I hate for that amount of money.

Any of you have any thoughts on M4 vs 840?

Now if only I could get it in Laguna Seca blue...

This was exactly my mindset when I picked up my M8 last week, coming from an M4. The dealer paid off my lease a few months early and now I'm driving an M8 for $1300 a month on standard lease terms. Given the controversial redesign of the M4 and the fact that it'll be over $1k a month, it's a no brainer, even for the 840, in my book. It's a lot more car for not much more money.

I also came from an M4 to the M8. Between the two, I'd go to the 8. The new 4 series makes me feel like I'm some teenager driving a Civic SI.

There are not going to be any M8 coupes next year so I would have to get an 840 or M850. I would be all over an M8 for 1300 considering I got a way early quote on an 840 for 1200. Have you driven an 840? How underpowered does it feel?

The way the M8 depreciates, if you’re not looking to lease, you may be able to find a nice pre-owned or CPO M8 for close to what you’re thinking of spending on the 840.

Test drive before you buy. These are two completely different cars, the 8 is more GT car than sports car, while the M3/4 lean towards the other end.

This.

And the 840 will be so much slower than your M4

Yea, I need to drive one. I'll compare the payments on the M850 when I get around to doing it officially. The similarly specced 850 I'd do is $116,700, which is a pretty big jump from $98,650, and especially from the $80k M4. Perhaps there is even more room to discount it though compared to the 840? I'm guessing the 850 would be around $300 more/month.

I'd agree with you coming from a M4 the more equivalent 8-series would be a M850i to keep within your targeted budget. The catch-22 is you're about a year too late to get a deeply discounted M850i as that happened with the gluttony of the 2019s on the ground when the 2020s started manufacturing. For the 2020s there was a limited amount of allocations and that appears to be the same for the 2021s.

Right now there are a total of 16 2020 M850i coupes and 52 2021 M850i coupes on the ground. Obviously the best deals will be had with the 2020s but there are not many so they may be all gone by April. Given your April parameters a M850i or M8 CPO may be your best bet just depending on the offers to be had. Not to offend the 840i owners out there but in my mind the TwinPower Turbo inline 6 is under powered for the heavyweight 8-series. However, team it up with either the N63 or S63 and it is an amazing drive.

Thanks for the comments. It doesn't really sounds like there is much new and different 20 vs 21 model so it doesn't seem I'd be missing out on much if I went with a 20. I don't have or need to wait til April. It was just my thought that if I got a 21 that would be the safe post winter time to get one. I suppose if I could find an 850 with the specs I wanted now, especially if the prices on them were good I'd consider doing it now. But you are saying there are only 16 new 20's left in the country to be sold? How do you know the numbers? I'd much prefer the 850 over 840, just depends on how expensive it starts getting.

Edit: my plan was to order the car anyway so I am sure to get the specs I want.

I came out of 2 F80 M3s - a 2015 and then a 2018 M3C into the G16 840i GC.
Granted, I was looking for a different, more refined experience, but I have to say I have been pleasantly surprised the pick-up of the 840i. I know it is ~100hp down on the M3, and weighs 200kg more, but it still goes. The biggest difference for me is in the handling and how long (and wide) it is.

If you haven't test driven one, I would definitely give it a go. It certainly is not an M3/4 or for that matter an M850i, but I haven't been disappointed.

Keep in mind a stage 1 tune could take it up to north of 400hp...

Too much for me to weigh in on regarding your question, but if it were me, I’d be choosing the M4 over the 840. If it were 850 vs M4, the 850 would be my choice (depending on specs).

However, the reason I am commenting is regarding the image. That is only the second M8 I have seen (anywhere / online) in Laguna Seca Blue, other than mine. I knew a second one would appear at some point. When and where was that image taken? It looks to be the exact same spec as mine. Here is a photo from my delivery day (my car has now been entirely modified / altered).

That looks like the pic was taken at BMW M-Track Days here in the US. A friend of mine went in Miami last weekend and he said they drove M8 and M5 on the track (lead/follow).

Correct. It was from M Track day in Indianapolis and I fell madly in love with the color. I assume you ordered it as an individual color? $5000?

Thanks for the comment. Good to here an opinion from someone with an 840. Part of me feels like I am buying the equivalent of a 328 but then I realize, this is a $100,000 car. How would you describe the handling difference?

There was (is) a promotion that allowed for a large range of individual colors at no cost. Could have been ordered through that promotion, but I know he’s in Canada and it may not have been offered up there.

I think that was for GCs. I'd be all over it if I could get it on a coupe.

I'm partial to a V8 but very happy with the B58 in my Z4. I'd be miserable in the 840. Purely subjective. Test drive required.

I'm partial to the V8 as well. The problem is that my wallet is partial to the 6. I definitely need to go drive one though.

I'd try getting a favorable lease buyout & keeping that M4 a few more years if my wallet weighed in.

Already did that actually. My lease was up a month or two ago. After 4 years I am ready for something new and exciting. Apparently I have a problem with new shiny things.
