M850gc vs X6 M50

Hello everyone, I posted a similar post in the X5/6 section to feel both groups, had anyone went from X5/6 to M850gc and regretted it? I'm trying to decide between the two, seating position, ground clearance etc... I know without a doubt I love the way the 850 drives plus the one I'm eyeing is fully loaded, I appreciate any insights, thank you.

8GC is a much better vehicle depending on your priorities.

Do you need backseat room? A large cargo space? Towing? or any SUV-specific items? Or do you just need a point a to b vehicle that can provide some fun while still fitting four and carrying a small amount of cargo.

If you don't need an SUV I don't see why not to get the 8GC. Could you list some things that are a must have for your next vehicle to better gauge what would be right for you?

Hey Jstein55 thank you for the reply, we're a family of 4 that could use the car once a year for a long road trip, cargo space would be nice for when I need it, which is rarely and I say 90% of the time i'm alone in the car except for dropping off the kids at school in the morning, I don't need the tow capabilities.

An 8GC should be plenty fine and if you are taking trips I would say the idea of renting an SUV/Minivan would solve the problem of space if you don't find the M8GC to be suitable for that. I wouldn't get an SUV when you would only be taking advantage of its features for one week a year, and then spending the other 51 weeks wanting something lower and sportier.

Another option if you wanted to mix sedan like handling with SUV practicality would be options like the E63S Wagon, AMG GT4D, RS6 and RS7.

At 90% solo outside of taking the kids to school the M850i GC is the solid choice as you'll definitely appreciate the performance over the X6 M50i. For the once a year road trip a SUV rental fits that bill perfectly. In fact it somewhat aligns with my 2020 M850i Coupe purchase rationale as I too am solo 90% of the time (other 10% has the wife in the passenger seat) but our son is out of the house. In the rare case we need 3 or more in a car that is where my wife's X5 comes into play.

Let's say I'm still 50/50, this forum solely recommends the M850 and the X5/6 forum solely the X6 :

A beautiful sedan that handles well with a luxury interior, or an ugly hunchback SUV that will suffer driving dynamics wise due to its taller ride and heavier curb weight and only satisfy your needs once a year.

8GC is the way to go, and you can rent a car for vacation. No need to waste the use of an suv for your purposes most of which will be driving alone or dropping the kids at school. Don't give into the crossover craze.

We went from an X6M to M850i GC and love it!

We’ve owned 3 X6’s over the years, so perhaps it’s a bit of wanting something different.

As they’ve redesigned the X6’s, they’ve done a nice job of evolving the design. The M850i is “brand new”, so stands out as more unique.

Back seats have plenty of room. I’m 6’4” and don’t feel cramped. Trunk is gigantic - perhaps more space than the X6!

thank you for the insight so you think there's enough space in the trunk and the small opening isn't an issue? also I know you're based in florida but have you encountered any snow with your car?

Agree what has been said before but ultimately the priority is to get the car you like the best.

Utility is secondary especially given your situation.

OMG, the trunk is RIDICULOUSLY big! Could almost fit a coffin in the thing. I would almost wager it’s similar volume as X6’s, just not a tall (much deeper). Back seats fold as well if you ever need more. Never had an issue with the opening size, but depends what you’re planning to put into it.

We’ve lived all over, grew up in Midwest so know snow well. I’ve driven X6 in a “dusting” of snow and it scared the hell out of me. Literally had a Prius pass me on highway and I felt as if I was on ice the entire time. It’s all about the tires. If you get X6, you’ll need winter tires regardless (and they’re pricier as they are very wide). Without them, it’s like driving on ice. (I’m a confident driver, even in snow - that experience was an eye opener for me with summer tires in snow)

The M850i is all wheel drive (and all wheel steering, which is fantastic). You’ll likely need winter tires on it regardless. Although, with the narrower tread it is likely better naturally. Ground clearance might be the only concern if you get a lot of snow. I daily drove my 911 TTS for a while, so the M850i feels like it has a ton of clearance comparatively. If you’re coming from an SUV, that may be something you’ll miss.

You're definitely going to miss the higher seating position, especially on the freeway in heavier traffic. Being able to see "above" the vehicle in front of you is a major bonus in keeping track of traffic snarls ahead of you.

Also keep in mind that it's difficult for some people to get in and out of cars that are very low to the ground, like the 8. When I switched to a 7-Series from an X5 a few years ago that was something I didn't account for, as some of my older relatives find the ingress/egress quite a challenge.

Handling and performance-wise it's no comparison. Even the "lowly" 840i is a rocket ship whether on the highway or stop light to stop light.

Both great choices in their own rights! Tough decision.

Hello.

I had similar decision making..

Going from G30 540i mperf. (Seems there is not enough space here for me anymore)

When the 8 released I was almost sure that I would go for M8 cabrio... but its 1y ago, now I have small baby at home and changed my mind..

For me it was M8 gc vs X5M.

m8
+ heart thing for me
+ super sporty feel and drive
+ design
+ almost nobody has it

- too low (I will scratch bumper soon or later because our streets and sidewalks are bad)
- absolutely no space on backseats, I was sad because I thought that would be much better than 4 gc but for me when I tried it was almost the same - no way to sit here for adults so I cant take nobody adult from my family for longer trip
- I dont like the trunk, worse than 5er (I never thought that the baby stuff takes that much space )
- you can see nothing in mirror but thanks cameras doesnt matter
- no glass roof for M8
- in two bmw saloons recommended me NOT the 8.. They said "take the M5 instead its more practical a better drive", they said they dont like the 8er drive.

X5M (Driven only 50d btw)
+ more luxury feel inside + nicer dashboard (subjecitve)
+ never had suv and I like it (subjective)
+ view around and "high feeling"
+ much more space in interior, trunk
+ big beast -> safety (8 is rly low on ground)
+ my gf and parents would like it much more (manipulation with baby, baby stuff, getting in/out for parents, my gf feel safer and maybe dont worry to drive it as the 8 )
+ as said above, for me its more family-friendly car
+ glass roof

+- comfort? (tested just 50d, M going to be stiffer)

- sporty feeling
- not that special as 8
- backseats almost same like 5er but much better than 8 gc.. the "-" is for I thought in that size of car could be better..
- for most of us not a dream car

If I have no family or no needed to take someone on back seats I would definitively take the m8 cab or m8 gc.
... but I have so I went for family car with sporty feel.

If I had more money I would go for X5/X6 50i (comfort drive, family car, "wifes car" )+ M8 cabrio hehe.

I have ordered the X5m in standard but equipped it that much so difference from comp is only 1800€ but I still cant get info from dealers if is comp stiffer or not.

Have a nice day :-)
