BMW M8 Competition reviews

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
First reviews of the M8 are out and seem to be mixed.

General pros seem to be the engines endless power and its smooth delivery, relatively good driving dynamics, secure and capable handling from xDrive.

The general consensus for the cons seem to be not as tactile as it could be, AMG still leads with its V8 exhaust notes, the brake by wire system seems to have no Goldilocks mode, and whether the M850i/M5 present itself as a "better buy."

Here's some reviews... discuss your thoughts below! Does the M8 appeal to you? Or would you rather have vehicles like the M5, AMG GT 63, S63, or Porsche 911 instead for the price?

My main take-aways

From a distance and a dynamic standpoint, the M8 isn't a huge step away from the M-tuned M850i xDrive. They're indistinguishable in many ways, and that's not good. The M8 should look, sound, feel, and just be the alpha dog, but it doesn't come off that way. I like it, but I wanted to love it.

And I’m sorry, but the switchable brake modes seem like a solution to a problem that never existed. I actually preferred it in the softer ‘Comfort’ mode rather than ‘Sport’, as the later mode was easier to modulate and less grabby.
There are three modes for the gearbox, meanwhile, but none of them stopped me from pining after a dual-clutch gearbox. The eight-speed torque converter auto is effective enough, but it leaves you wanting for both more obedience when it comes to manual downshifts and more aggression on the upshifts.

It’s a near 200K car that offers marginally better performance than 120K M5. No surprise it didn’t get stellar reviews.

They still would have had a hard time selling this even under perfect circumstances where CFRP driveshaft/body parts/DCT/latest hybrid technology are used yet the hardware is identical to the M5. That ZF gearbox is a major reason why the car feels like a slightly modified M850i, which every reviewer mentions.

Maybe the majority of customers nowadays are generous enough to buy a supposedly halo car that is hardly different from its base model.

I would take M8 over M5. Its a attractive car but for the price point I rather jump into Porsche 911.

$200k could go along way on a lot of different cars. I couldn't imagine spending that on a BMW unless I had a completely disposable income. I'm not a flashy, need attention kind of person but at that price point I would be looking in the used super car market for sure. Then again BMW is certainly not marketing for people of my status.

My M3 was $85k out the door new and I picked it up used a handful of years later for half the new price. By far my favorite car I've ever owned but would I consider paying the new price? I doubt it. Every time I put a drink in the flimsy cup hold that dumps my drink at every corner I think, really? This is what you'd get for $85k? I can't imagine the quirks in a $200k that would drive me nuts.

I'm frugal though.

It doesn't sound good from that carwow video. The M5 CP and M850i sounded better.

Locally, I can get an M850i plus an M2 CP for the same price of an M8. Ridiculous

I don't get the purpose or business case of this model?

Wealthy baby boomers to rip Florida hwys and maybe an occasional single male? How many will they sell. Or China?

Why not have a model that competes with R8, 911, lambo, nsx, gtr etc?

If I want M coupe it will be M4 or M2.

For the size and price tag I think I would opt for a Panamera Turbo etc... could of just developed a better M4 and M3. Ugh... don’t get me wrong the M8 looks awesome but it’s just the price tag that irks me.

My M5 made sense at 110k which is what I got it for... the M8 makes zero sense at 160k or whatever it totals out at.

Far better options at that price point for a sporty coupe.

They should have given it a unique engine, DCT, and more light weight materials for that price. Not just an m5 with a new shell.

Agree. I'd love to see an M-designed dual clutch make its way into the higher end M's as well as a new V8 engine completely. I feel like the N/S63 is getting a bit old despite all the upgrades its had over the years, and it really doesn't help that AMG is making some fantastic V8's right now.

I wish this car were RWD and 300-400kg lighter. Get rid of AWD and some luxuries and I'm sure it wouldn't be that hard to get there. That way they would have the m850i for people who are more luxury oriented, and the M8 as more of a sports car, and give it enough differentiation from the M5.

Yeah, the M8 doesn't stand out enough from the M5. I still think if this car was named 6/M6 it would make more sense, but calling this an 8 series and saying that it is a "flagship" vehicle, just doesn't make any sense, as it really just seems like a 5 series coupe, which in the good ol' days would have been called, the 6 series.

Hard to disagree with, the M8 just doesn't seem like the best choice in regards to its price and other similar competing vehicles. Even worse is, not only would I get a 911 over an M8, but I'd likely also go for an M5, or AMG GT over one as well.

I have seen 570 leases that are in the same range as the M8C's anticipated lease price.

Agree completely, but in what country did you buy a used M3 for 85K?
