Recommended iPhone for Charging Tray

I have an iPhone 8 Plus with an Otter Box case and it does not fit in the charging tray of my M8 (it fits fine in our X7).

Does the iPhone 11 fit or the 11 Pro smaller size?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

11 Pro Max in Spigen case that adds a couple millimeters to each end fits with a couple mm each side to spare.

Same here with my Google Pixel 3XL that has nearly identical sizing to the 11 Pro Max. Also running a Spigen case (have been on all my phones for the past 5+ years) as they offer plenty of protection without the bulkiness of Otter, etc.

I appreciate all the feedback on what works. I would like my phone to fit. I saw Apple is planning to release some new iPhones on 10/13, so I'll compare the new sizes to what you have told me fits and then get a new phone.

On a related, minor issue, my lift master garage remote clicker rattles on the sun visor (I'm assuming because of how stiff the Competition is) so I'm going to have to figure out a solution or figure out how to program the car to open our garage doors. I think our lift master openers have rolling codes so I'll have to break out the ladder.

Interesting that the garage remote clicker rattles on the sun visor but I'll assume its the parts inside. That aside the one thing I've been errant on over the past 10 months is setting up the Homelink in the rear view mirror on my M850i to open my garage door. It too has rolling codes and it is best done with two people vs one. I set up my wife's X5 a few years back as a one man operation and it was a bit of fun to say the least, i.e., press the button on the garage door opener, scramble down the ladder to the car and hit the Homelink button in time. Fun and games which I will eventually do when I'm absolutely bored from the COVID-19 work from home scenario I'm living in.

Although I'm an Android user given my role driving technology adoption I keep up with Apple as well. Rumor is that the iPhone 12 equivalent of the current iPhone 11 Pro Max will have a 6.7" screen vs the current 6.5". However, the question will be is how the bezel design works and whether it will be physically significantly bigger from a width/height POV. Since your weighing the options it totally makes sense to sit it out until they are officially released. If there isn't any major enhancements worth it the iPhone 11 Pro Max is a great bet vs the upcharge for the iPhone 12 equivalent.

Not sure how true that is from a number's / mass perspective, thus based on others' experience, but a garage (car shop) in Germany I have known for years told me that when using Iphones, the charging station tends to get very hot as compared to when charging other devices. These people have an M850i for "testing and tuning" purposes and they said they had their charging station replaced due to this issue. Anyone else experienced it?

I've noticed that the iPhone gets a little hotter than usual when charged via the in-car station, but I haven't noticed anything unusual with the station itself.

bloozemanAZ, thank you for the suggestion. I will first try another garage remote clicker since we have extra. Maybe the current one has been dropped once or twice. My X7 has a alcantara sun visor and headliner and my wife's Escalade does as well, so it's not an issue in those cars.

New iPhones announced today. The largest, iPhone 12 Pro Max will have 6.7" screen as opposed to the 6.5" screen of the 11 Pro Max, but the overall size is mm different. And it seems that my 11 Pro Max has room to moved side to side in the tray. I don't imagine there will be any problems fitting the 12 Pro Max in there.

I appreciate all of the feedback from everyone. Right now, I am leaning toward order the iPhone 12 Pro (not the max).

I can confirm that the iPhone 12 pro max does indeed fit in the charging tray of a G15....at least it does if you put it in a Spigen thin fit or Spigen liquid air.....the phone hasn’t been released but, the cases have and I received the above today and tried them both in the car....there’s still about ¼ inch (5mm) of space on the side.

Yeah, I posted on the M5 board (for some reason their tray isn’t as wide, 159mm) that we have 170mm, and the 12 Pro Max is 160.8mm. I never use a case though, so I was confident, but it’s good to know the slim cases work pretty well too.
