TLDR: I liked the carbon seats in my M4 but the wife didn't, I needed an M car with standard sport seats, and the M8 fit the bill. The carbon buckets in my M4 were the catalyst that ultimately led to me moving to the M8. I loved them and felt I was sitting in them rather than on them. My daily fifty mile round trip work commute was fine as well as long distance trips. All good if it were just me. But, for various reasons my wife became a more often than anticipated passenger and she hated them. I decided to remedy that by turning in the leased M4 early and ordering a new one with the standard sport seats. The best my long time dealer--Passport BMW--could do was get me a 2024 allocation late spring with a late 2023 delivery. So be it. I'm on the list. In the meanwhile, I've always loved the M8--its appearance, especially its rear perspective, and that v8. My previous cars included an e39 M5, e60 M5, and an e92 M3, so they opened me up to to other than 6 cylinder M cars. Long story short, Passport had a dealer ordered M8 that I looked at and considered over three months. I went back and forth considering the trade-off between a new M car now versus waiting for a 2024 M4 later this year. I could spec the M4 for me but the M8 was what it was--a grey BMW with black trim and not, for example, an Aventurin Red or Isle of Man Green car with carbon fiber bits. I decided to test drive it. Up until that point, I had seen pictures of the car but not the car. In person, the skyscraper grey exterior and black/sakhir orange interior combination was striking. Exterior carbon fiber wasn't missed. The sound of the engine was intoxicating and the craftmanship of the interior was well beyond my standard M4. My initial concern with the M8 versus the M4 was the size and weight difference. Turns out size is very close although the M8 appears to me to be much larger even though it's only two inches longer and one inch wider than the M4. And, its height is two inches lower due to a lower roofline. However, the weight difference is noticeable. My M4 was RWD and the M8 is obviously AWD, so while it may not be as nimble as the M4 its handling so far feels planted. But different. I picked it up last week and have driven it around 250 miles. So far, I'm happy with my choice. I don't track my cars and would have kept the M4 except for my wife's unhappiness with the carbon buckets. I have found the M8 to be an unbelievable blend of raw power and incredible luxury. I don't feel a need to make any mods other than a tint, H&R springs, and spacers. And, my wife is happy with the passenger seat.
