911 Carrera... Why S?

Sorry,

I know this is a really juvenile question, but I don't know that much about Porsches. I was browsing their site and realized that the only difference between a Carrera and a Carrera S is about 40 horse power, 30 torque, .1 seconds in zero-60, and a whopping $10,000.

What am I missing? There has to be something more special about the S than a mere bump in displacement and power?

Thanks.

The S has a larger displacement engine, xenons instead of halogens standard, quad exhaust instead of dual, bigger rims, and I believe it's a little lower to the ground. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Ummm...no. The difference between a 335i and an M3 is a lot more than a bit of extra power.

im not just say engine performance im saying the whole package. the real difference is 40 more hp, 22 ft/lbs, 3.6 to 3.8,18 to 19 inch wheels, pasm standard, bi-xnenon headlights, .39 inches lower, 56 pounds heavier from carrera to carrera s ( i thought i would be lighter, wierd). That is right off of the porsche website.

The suspension's different too. The engine isn't only more powerful, it's also more responsive. It's the torque the car should've had from the start. The Carrera S seems like the real entry into what 911s are

Really, if you've driven both, the difference is actually 335 to M3like

It's more like the difference between a 328i and 335i, adjust for Porsche prices.

3.6 versus 3.8
345 hp versus 385 hp
228 lb ft torque versus 310
180 mph versus 188 mph
4.7 sec versus 4.5 sec
18" wheels versus 19" wheels
Halogen lamps versus HID lamps
PASM optional versus PASM standard
0.28 Cd versus 0.29 Cd
18/25 mpg versus 18/25 mpg (same)
3075 lbs versus 3131 lbs

Suspension is the same but the S has PASM standard and is 10 mm lower. PASM is nice on varying road conditions but not something you must have to enjoy the car. The PASM sport suspension (different than regular PASM) option costs more on the C2 because PASM itself is an option. LSD costs the same. Brake calipers are different colors but same 4-pot system. However, the S has larger calipers and the front axle has larger pads and thicker rotors. Different exhaust tips.

If you order a new 997 you can pretty much ask the factory to make what you want, but for big $$$.

You can turn a non-S into anything you want with later aftermarket mods. Some mods are even acceptable by PCNA.

But the big thing you might consider is resale. Not just price, but how easy to resell. The C2S will usually sell better/quicker.

The prices on used 997s are dropping like a cement overcoat in the East River right now. So if you are buying new, work a great lease deal or keep the car for a long time until things change. And be sure to get the car you really want.

That said, you might consider a 2-3 year old used CPO 997.

I'd actually say 997, 997S, GT3. The GT3 is the real hotrod and the one serious owners seem to go for.

BTW, the differences between a standard 997 and a 997S are less in the Gen 2 cars (997.2) than the Gen 1, at least over here.

Not exactly. Between the 328 and 335 there's almost 100 hp difference (actually more than 100hp difference considering that BMW underrates the 335) while in the Carrera and Carrera S there's only about 40, that's why I was confused, it's still a little hard for me to understand the real benefit of the S.

All Wheel Drive plus all the other stuff, if you can't see the benefit then we can't help.
