WTF is wrong with M850i depreciation?
I bought a brand new M850i GC on 03.2020 for 130k EUR (That's with a 9k discount) all cash.
Now the same dealer offered me 65k EUR for the car if I want to trade it for the new i7. WTF?!? The car has 10k miles on it. It looks brand new inside and out, no stone chips, ceramic coated each summer. Still have 1.5 years of warranty and free service. How the hell has it lost 50% of it's value in 3.5 years? The model hasn't even updated yet, basically it's the same 850i as three years ago just with a bit smaller and less weird looking monitor and more special front grille. I also have a new XM which I paid 207k EUR for. I wonder if it also drops 50% in 3-4 years. |

I paid £50300 for my 11 month old 840GC, immaculate, 11000 miles and all the toys in 2021, first owner paid £92000……
No idea what it’s worth now (and no real interest as it is a keeper), but I would be happy with £30,000. |

the same happened with other 'premium' luxury cars (MB AMG, Jaguar....)
EVs depreciate even more than ICE (check Ix forum) Only some exotic and Porsche so far holding the values but nobody know for how long.. |

The REAL question is, why are you buying an i7?

I noticed that I drive more in electric mode in my XM and I want to drive more in XM than my m850i. It has better brakes, more comfy and overall a nicer place to be in. Also it feels more agile than my 850. I have tried the i7 last week and I liked it a lot! Totally different level of comfort compared to m850 and also feels more agile when you need it.
The 8 has the best exterior and engine sound. But you don't see the exterior when you drive the car |

I believe the automotive market is over correcting right now.... For so long the prices have been insane and for all of us who got to pay sticker price during past couple years will benefit the most. In my region of the US repo's are up sky high, lots a getting full prices are dropping but they are dropping in say a panic mode. I just picked up a GTS 4.0 Porsche for under 100k with its OG sticker 2023 with options 137k got the car with 1350 miles.... It's worth more than what I paid but there are cars sitting on lots right now that weren't there past two years or so. Just a thought but hang in there when time is write it should rebound to "normal" lol if there is a normal anymore.

BMW watered down the entire line up by creating incremental product lines (X1,X3, X4, X5, X6, X7) to sell more volume of cars which drives down the value and appeal of every individual model. The reputation for reliability took a massive hit too (early turbo V8's burning oil, HPFP failures with the N54, rod bearings with the S54). Unlike back in the 90's and early 2000's, BMW also has not released a car that has reached any critical acclaim in the industry (i.e. Porsche GT cars, new Z06). BMW as a brand has gone down the Lexus path by building cars for the masses which has served them well financially but part of the volume business means that each one of them is worth less now.

It's a niche vehicle. Glad I leased.

I made $17k on my 2019 M850 during Covid. Go figure. My 2022 M8 was $197k CND new and now has a value of $140k. But I bought it knowing that would occur and intend to keep the vehicle. Just don’t buy a car for resale. Buy airplanes instead. They retain their value. Lol.

50% depreciation totally normal
That is normalized depreciation - especially for a specialty car like the 8 series. We are just spoiled by the insanity of the 'covid market.' I've been waiting two years longer than I thought it would take for the market to normalize. It's getting there.
And in response to the 'why buy a new 7 series' poster: BECAUSE THEY ARE FREKIN AWESOME!!!! Last edited by Frupal; 10-10-2023 at 08:41 AM.. Reason: added text |
