840i... Which is more fun to drive?
I’m looking to order an 840i. Which would be more fun to drive:
840i xDrive Or 840i RWD w/rear wheel steering ?

lighter car with better handling characteristics/easier drifting via RWD is more appealing to me than the power aspect. Any thoughts on the rear wheel steering?

Case-in-point is my neighborhood streets have numerous "roundabout" speed enforcement areas vs the typical speed bumps. In my outgoing Lexus performance sedan with RWD I used to take them at ease at 30 MPH vs their design goal of 15 MPH. Now that I'm accustomed to the extra length of the M850i coupe with the active rear wheel steering I'm pushing 40 MPH when I feel like having some fun. |

It helps for sure but nothing delivers the feel of RWD imho...

While the RWD may be more "fun" to drive and allow for more in that respect, the decisive question for me would be "where I live, does it get cold and icy and do I use the car during a harsh winter regardless as a daily driver"? If the answer is a clear yes, then there is no way around XDrive for me at least. In the cold and in the wet the XDrive will always transmit that extra feeling of safety which does not harm when you are moving around with that much power. If the 840 Xdrive has active rear steering too, that would be for me another valid reason to go this path.

I would say RWD purely because its lighter, however if you mainly want a fun car, something smaller and lighter would do you better justice, 8er is more of a comfy GT.

As a side note, that reminds me of a time when we were visiting one of my wife's friends, who drove a suburu and lived on a fairly busy two lane arterial. She pestered the city to install speed bumps and was finally successful. She was so proud, the next time we saw them. I said, "You know, Sarah, it just means I now have to go at least twice as fast between them I order to maintain my average speed, don't you?" We've never been invited back. |

The all wheel steering is a first for me and I think its fantastic. For city driving, navigating roundabouts, sharp corners, congested streets and my steep driveway its excellent. On the open road I don't find it as "obvious" but the car is just one hell of a highway cruiser.

I just ordered the 840i RWD w/rear wheel steering. Thanks, all, for your help. Alpine white with cognac. They're gonna build it. I have a '20 X6 for winter driving.

Yes, the M850i is the heavy weight out of the group but at the end of the day it is significantly faster and better performing across the board.

Those are stock numbers and in the real world a M850i via launch control can beat that as can the Z4. Ambient temperature comes into play given a turbo charged vs super charged solution. However, even at 110 in the Phoenix summer months I still make the stock specs with a few 3.6's. In comparison though during January/February when the daytime highs were in the 60's I hit 3.3 on nearly every launch.

Due to the AC issue we had the chance to drive all 840 iterations as loaners.
The 840’s felt snappy but a bit anemic. Compliant but generic. This was emphasized by the fake engine noise. Sorry to say... The 850’s have the punch to move that chassis. Fun factor goes to that car. |

Wow - that's even more than I expected. I'd imagine 840i feels noticeably better in the turns. With a tune and exhaust that's a pretty appealing option. Or better yet, swap in an S58
