Carrera S. I hope it will be my next car, especially since I don't have anybody to drive around. I really think the 997S will be closer to the GT3 you wanted.

It's not "way" slower by any stretch. It's slower yes. But it more than makes up for it.

Take the 335 vs. M3 argument... and turn it around.

Umm, it weighs 500-600 pounds less than the M3. It won't be slower by any huge margin on the straights, and certainly not on a track.

997 is very reliable. You'll read about RMS issues, but that's blown way out of proportions.

This is my 3rd 911, and 4th Porsche...I consider Porsche's to be very reliable based on comparable makes. However, I am not comparing reliability to a Camary here...totally different products.

With 11-12in tires in the back and the weight of the engine digging in as you come out of the apex, traction (LSD) should not be a great concern.

I still miss my 04' 550 Spyder edition Boxster S, even though my 135i has 130 whp more

Porsche really is a different league of car compared to BMW once you add all the options, It has such a great feel and is simply more fun... I would definitely go for the 997.

imho, and fwiw, if you're concerned about ownership costs then you shouldn't be thinking high performance Euro cars. Anyway, you know that, I know that, and we all know that.

But, and also imho, there's more to speed, and mfg's and magazine stats. Seriously, unless you plan to track often (and that can get expensive) where are you going to safely drive a GT2/3, etc..?? Or even a M3? I realize owning one gives the owner a feeling of the "best" etc., but where's the real practicality?

Anyway, you need to decide why you want these sort of cars to begin with. The M3 and P-cars are different animals. One is a sports car and one is a 'sports sedan.' You know that, I know that, we all know that.

There's a lot to be said in driving/owning a sports car. And that ownership doesn't just mean speed/power only. And a rear engine/rear wheel drive is a whole different ball game.

There's more attached that has nothing to do with speed. It's also history, tradition, camaraderie among owners, etc.. Everyone dwells on the stats because they are the only 'tangible' things one can easily wrap their minds around.

Pick something that you will truly enjoy living with. Something that honestly can give you (and you only) a big smile. And of course that will be different with each person.

fwiw, I personally don't care so much about how fast you can go in a straight line. Give me enough torque, an excellent suspension, and the canyons, and I'll smile all the time. And it's also all those other intangibles that the 'stats' don't ever reveal that helps keep that smile on my face.

No OP I have not bought anything. Glad I didn't too. Possibly going to try the island life for a year or so and re-charge me batteries. My soul has been on slow drip for awhile now. Cars/material back burner....Batteries front burner.

I ran head to head with a modded C2S at the strip. It could not even break into the 12's, almost a full second difference, pretty big, along with 5 mph in trap speed.

We ran head to head 4 times... so I'm speaking from hands on experience I can back up, you aren't, so your OPINION holds little weight.

The weight difference is not 600 pounds either, get your figures straight and stop spreading nonsense.
