Actually, to my disappointment it isn't a lot lighter. It is only 88 lbs. lighter. That won't get you much performance gain. That difference in weight is often what people in this country need to lose in weight. Funny how many people bitch about the car gaining a few pounds when they themselves should be going on a diet as well.

yeah it wont be that much lighter but hey, 88 lbs is still 88 lbs. It's going to be a fun car nonetheless.

Yea but its not going to be significantly cheaper than a 3 series, is smaller length wise than a Ford focus, and with that small size u'd expect it to be much lighter. 88 lbs is really nothing.

I agree. It's hard to rationalize going to a smaller car if i'm not going to lose a lot of weight. It's a different argument if we're talking 7 vs. 5, because those are sedans, and space is the key. For me 5 vs. 3 isn't an argument because I was looking for a coupe. If I'm going to get a small car, I wouldnt buy anything over 3200lbs. Geesh, the last gen R32 was awd and was 3256lbs. VW did the same thing and messed up by making the new R32 such a pig. The Boxster weighs less than 2900 in a stick. EVOs and STIs are around 3200 pounds. The RX-8 which is a pretty spacious, comfortable car weighs 3000, but I'll give bmw the benefit of the doubt and blame it on the rotary. Perhaps the N54 is just that heavy that making the 1 as lightweight as other cars in its sizerange was impossible.

It looks like bmw made the 1-series for a size related niche instead of a performance related niche. It reminds me a lot of the A3.

The Z4 MC is 3230 lbs unladen. The 335i coupe is 3571 unladen. Straight from BMW's website.

Not as hideous as the roofline is on the 335 vert.

I just noticed in your sig you have a Z4. My bad, but regardless the Z4 is ugly. Ask 100 people which car is prettier, and you can bet your ass the 335 vert will win every time.

You guys can ague about weight, but you can't argue about the sweet monoblock multipiston brakes it will have... and remapped throttle response.. among other things. The 135i will be geared for driving enthusiasts much more the the 335i is.

Hey I have a question concerning the 135i's size to it's engine space.

Do you think the engine space in the 1 will be smaller than the 3 series? I know the 3 series engine bay is already cramped and after market intercooler's and turbos and such are finding some difficulties to fit/get bigger. If the 1 has a smaller bay do you think this will differentiate the mods available for the two cars and possible handicap the 1 series engine aftermarket even more so than the 335?

Probably not that much since the performance world will be concentrating on the 135i not the 335i. If you want performance buying a 335i and modding it really makes no sense since no matter what you do to it it will be slower and won't handle as good as a similarly equipped 135i. I'm sure a 535i has an even bigger bay than the 335i, but no one will build exclusive mods for it either.
