Sudden acceleration & crash!

I have a 2022 M850 xi convertible. Few weeks ago, got a message 'Driving comfort temporarily reduced.' Took it to dealer & got it back after a week or so. They had to change a battery and replace a computer module. Car was running fine for a week or so until I was parking the car and without any warning it lunged forward! A concrete wall was 3 feet in front of the car and no sensors were activated, auto brakes did not work even though I was literally standing on the brakes!! The car hit the wall causing damage to the front. Its with BMW dealership now & they have asked BMW USA to analyze the data in the 'black box' to see what transpired.
Any thoughts, comments?!

Not sure if the issue you faced is related to what has been seen in the UK with misreading of speed signs. https://www.edge-ai-vision.com/2023/...i-driven-adas/

Glad you weren't hurt

My only thought is: I immediately deactivate any "auto" pilot/brake/assist function of any sort in any car I buy. Can't trust that thing.

Thanks for the info. All I can say is the car definitely took on a life of its own and accelerated while my foot was on the brake! No sensors went off, no autobreaking! Nothing!!

Can't say I would fault you on that. As the saying goes in statistics, 'garbage in, garbage out.' The algorithms placed in these AI enabled cars are in their infancy at best!

I thought just Tesla had a mind of their own. Know our cars have been infected.

Glad you’re ok and no one else was hurt. I’m sure this is a top priority for BMW.

The brakes on any modern car will over power the accelerator at all times.

Most instances like this occur in elderly drivers who misplace their foot on the brake and gas.

I don't think our autopilot operates at parking speeds.

This is interesting as I find my M8 has a lurch some times when Im coming to a halt and let off the brake vs a slow coast. If I dont back in (which I do almost always) I can see this fucker ramming a car or a wall.

So are you saying that while parking, the autopilot doesn’t kick in? While parking that’s exactly what the Driver Assist function is supposed to do! And in my case, when the car auto-accelerated none of the safety functions kicked in: no sensors going off, no autobraking.

I hold three United States patents for automotive safety systems to help with the shortfalls facing many of today's automated/autonomous systems...they are far from fool proof.

From the horses's mouth! Good to know.
BMW tells me they have started an internal Claims investigation.

I dont even use that system, it scares me LOL.

But lets say my car just got washed and I pull it into the garage towards the end as I inch forward the rpms go crazy at times and it lurches vs a very slow roll... weird shit and thankfully Im all over the brake.

I know this is different than your situation but its still a BMW issue IMHO.

Of course this is total speculation, but I can't help but wonder if this will lead some some sort of recall

My guess is at this point no, as I'm thinking most haven't taken their vehicles in for service for this, and if there's not a decent # of complaints not much will be done.

I have noticed my M850's idle will surge significantly at times after a warm (not hot) re-start, like after I wash it. It certainly isn't normal and the first few times I had to check to see if the floor mat was getting stuck up against the gas pedal which of course it wasn't.

wow, I've not had any of these issues some of you are experiencing. Scary for sure, I hope there is some sort of light shined on the root cause. Please don't forget to share updates.

^ That's because we have the M850i and we're inferior. The M8 doesn't have these types of petty issues

Interesting article, thanks for the link.
From countless false speed limit indications in my 840d, I never trust the system and always check local signage. Worse error I've seen is 80mph in a small English country village!
