Garage List
840i brake dust issue

My 2020 840i wheels are covered with brake dust after short rides. Longer rides the side & rear of the car gets covered.
I have the M-Sport package w/20" wheels.

Solutions?
Different brake pads, if so, what?

Thanks!

Yea it's a curse of high performance brake pads. I have to clean my wheels pretty much daily. Low dust brake pads will do the trick but they might not stop as good.

Yes, it's horrible. BMW needs to go back to the drawing board with the MSport brake pad design. Between the dusting and squeal, my bet is a first year engineer can design something better. Or, BMW should use the product I mention below.

Your best options are:

Suffer with it. Get some wheel woolies, a couple of buckets, sonax wheel cleaner plus and a good lubricating car wash soap (I use sonax for this as well). Clean often. I do suggest rinsing off the wheel cleaner plus and top layer of dust before agitating with a brush. If you agitate without rinsing off the dust first, you run the risk of scratching your wheel finish.

Change the pads to I sweep IS1500. Dusting is far less than the OEM pads. In my research, most people praise these pads. Just keep in mind that if you have brake issues, you'll surely have warranty challenges. Do your research.
