850i vs m8 engine differences?
Did a bit of searching on the differences between the two platforms and can’t seem to find much of anything. Are the internals the same between the two and only differences are tune related? Can any m8 mod work with an m850i

Some n63 have the external oil cooling- it'll have the motorsport package. S63 has dual oil pickup too for the sump. Mechantronics is different on the trans too but same trans unit.

So is the intake, exhaust manifolds and the list goes on and on.... Pistons are not the same, rods and bearings are not the same. I really wish I was able to have filmed at the BMW engine plant in Munich, When the S series is being produced the suit of parts are much different and in some cases install is different due to different tolerances within the engine components.
If your goal is to just make more power, then that is easy with either engine and no need to put S63 parts on the N63 because the aftermarket has plenty of great parts for both already. I'd even say probably cheaper too.

I’m in the process of getting the dme unlocked for my m4…. I haven’t looked at the m850i yet, but I’m sure the wife is going to want hers done too… I know there are 2 of them, are they both under the hood like the m550i?

This is a great topic for discussion. I’ve looked into it myself. I always was under the impression that the engines were different in some key areas, but shared most of the same parts—but definitely have some hardware differences. It’s not just about the tuning.

I have an extensively researched m850. Most parts are the same and if different many can be swapped in. The turbos are different and won't fit unless all plumbing goes in as well. You'll then run into issues with sensors since m8 may have a different air measurement method.
The m8 ind runner manifold does bolt up to the m850 turbos but it's unclear how the 02 sensors will like that. 1 member did the swap and had rough idle and hasn't posted any updates yet. The radiators are all the same as well. |
