Tyre muncher
Following on this post, I will relay my story so far, Booked in the car as others have experienced on slow manoeuvre's, the front tyres are being pushed along by the rears making horrible jumping movements and noises. The car has done just 8000 miles and BMW informed that all 4 tyres were shot. BMW dealer couldn't even offer replacements for a month due to Christmas and Covid. Kwik fit supplied and fitted the OE Bridgestone 007's then the car returned to BMW for alignment check. Was found to need no adjustment and was then charged for the check then the response was no further action required as it is a feature of the 8 series. I have owned previously numerous M cars from new, M3,M4, M5 X5M and none have ever went through tyres at under 10k miles. Complained to BMW UK who then offered to pay for the tyres I had just fitted, when I informed them it was not just the cost of the tyres it was the way the car drove. On parking it is embarrassing the noise the front wheels make and the way the car jumps in to the space. In Scotland it is cold just now that makes the problem sound worse, but in summer the problem is still there it is just shredding the inner and outer edges of the tyres then. When I refused the first offer from BMW UK to pay for the set of tyres I had just replaced, they upped the offer to pay for the next set as well, I am now going to ask BMW to take the car back as I am not prepared to continue with the embarrassment of driving it the way it is. I have scoured the brochure and I can't find where it tells me that the car will embarrass you and keep burning tyres at this rate. I will keep everyone updated with their response

Thanks for the updates. I don't think my situation is quite as bad, but my tyre wear was bad before putting the winters on for just 5,000 miles. Down to 2mm on the fronts.
I don't have the noise and jumping as you report, however there is signficant understeer even at slow speeds as you enter roundabouts. The car just feels like it wants to go straight. Please keep up the updates and we will see what the summer brings.

I have now had the Michelin Super sports fitted to the car
The fronts in particular look a lot better with more support for the outer edges and a much better tread pattern. No scrubbing feel on the steering when slow manouvering on full lock. I had the alignment checked at a bmw crash repair specialist as my vines dealership messed it up rather than fixed it Hoping Michelin’s will be better. Let’s see The car has done 8500 miles from new. Rears wore down to the markers at 8500 miles. Front sets are lasting about 4000 miles which is similar to the road test reports when the car first came out. |

I had this on my M550 the dealer changed the toe to 0 it's stopped outer edge cross hatch wear. They said the cars are set up for the Nuremberg ring! Not exactly your typical daily commute

Interesting that all issues seem to be related to right hand drive models...

I have 840d drop top. All the things I have seen in this thread I have had for myself and a bit more. Such a shame as such a nice car. Had so many looks during the summer from peapl on the side of the road. Now they look as it bangs and crashes as I move around in car parks. A red face not from the sun and dropped down roof but embarrassment . Shame shame shame. I will see what tomorrow brings as the lead engineer is going to call me. I’m dyslectic so sorry I’m not the best with the written word.

I have always found all BMW’s wear the edges badly so much so they create after about 4K the classic BMW tyre rumble. The outer edges go saw tooth. My M550 had it bad and as I had no intention of track day running the car BMW set the toe and camber to near Zero, never noticed any handling difference but stopped the wear.
I now have a had my new M850 for two weeks and have just had the same tweak done to it. My wife’s 2021 4 series coupe will have it done also prior to delivery. No more BMW rumble and eating tyres! BMW set their cars up for optimal handling but does not suit general road use. |

I had to replace the front high performance Bridgestone Potenza non run flats on my M850 at 7500 miles because of abnormal tread wear and a bubble on one of the tires due to my "spirited driving". I am now at 10000 miles and had to replace the rear tires due to an unrepairable puncture on the left rear. At the same time, the tire shop pointed out a bubble on one of the front tires that only had 2500 miles on it. So I opted to replace all four tires with Michelin Pilot Sport 4s. The ride is now smoother without loss of performance and I hope these tires last more than 7500-10000 miles. The Bridgestones are very grippy tires, but I think the All wheel drive, All wheel steering, anti-roll stabilization, and other features that give the M850 excellent handling characteristics put a lot of stress on the tires for such a heavy 4400 pound car. The Michelins seem better designed for this purpose. Other than the tire issues. I have no complaints. I still love driving the car and it continues to draw a lot of attention and compliments wherever I go.

So is the consensus the Pirellis Pilot Sport 4s plus toe and camber set to zero?
My winters will be coming off soon and I will take the opportunity to get the wheel settings adjusted. James.

Firstly Im delighted to find this forum and even more to see this problem being discussed as its been driving me nutz ever since I bought my 68 plate 840d.
It’s a similar story but the bones of it are : From day one (bought with 3k miles on clock) the car has been crabbing at very low speed with that jumping sound at the front at or close to full lock. When I say low speed I mean reversing off my drive and turning at the same time. Once I have travelled ½ mile or so it seems to stop so I get it for the first couple of roundabouts near me and then its gone. No steering issues at all at travelling speeds I hate saying this but you have to: Im not doing spirited driving which is pushing the car or tyres in anyway. The car is a cruiser not a racer to me. My previous cars, some BMW some not, have been giving me 25K+ per set with no bother I took the car back to bmw at around 9k miles because it was doing my head in, they checked all the set up of the wheels and chassis and said all as factory spec. They suggested we change the front set to the same potenza’s to see if that worked and split the costs 50:50 It didn’t work so to be clear on brand new fronts, pulling/turning off the driveway the tyres aren’t gripping enough to not bounce. They then went into push back mode. It’s a “feature” of the tyre or that model of car It’s a high performance tyre so prone to wear early “Could be your driving style” bla bla Tyrewear on my Bridgestone Potenza’s on this car have been original rears are now at 2mm after 14k miles and the last service last week recommended a change. And as above the fronts were changed around 9k ish and haven’t solved anything. So before seeing this thread I had wondered if Tyres are too sensitive to temperature which explains the driveway/first mile issues which then recover The full lock allows too much rotation meaning the tyres are almost side on to the road when turning causing that crabbing and jumping. Does the car have speed sensitive turning which is why its low speed problems for me. When I looked at new 840d in the showroom they see to have different tyres so I think they may have been continentals but what I did see was that the tyres have much more chunkier tread on the car and especially on that outer edge. The new potenza’s are almost like track day tyres ! Im not a tyre expert but maybe when the fronts need changing again I should look for a thicker tread based tyre but that could affect the driving experience in other ways. I guess the key point is that having seen this thread BMW must know there is an issue and are ducking it until the few become many!? |

I had the same problems with my 840d.I have just changed all 4 tyres to michelin pilot super sports,it has stopped the juddering on turns with full lock. I think the cars problems stems from the Bridgestone performance tyres. Last edited by A330; 03-18-2021 at 01:08 PM.. Reason: wording |

Update from my side. The DVSA has been unable to determine from BMW whether there is a defect on the car, and have ordered further action by BMW to get to a resolution to the problem. I am awaiting their call now, but I agree with all of the comments on this forum regarding the problem being specific to the Bridgestones (although I am not an expert).
I'll keep the forum posted when I hear from Beemer. |

Hi guys
Recently joined the forum, largely for this tyre problem. I had bought my m850i with 5k miles on and once car was delivered i complained tyres only had 3mm left all round with worn inners on fronts. With a bit back an forth BMW UK, not the dealer i purchased from, agreed to replace the 4 tyres (potenza's) and perform alignment. When booking in at local dealership i asked to change tyres to something else, i was informed that the only bmw approved tyre for the vehicle was the s007s or a pilot ss This being due to xdrive, warranty blah blah. I chose to stick with s007s due to the fact i found them a great tyre and i think much better than a pilot ss in performance anyway. 4k miles later my new tyres are down to 4mm and im considering calling bmw again. After speaking with Michelin they say there only BMW approved tyre is the pilot 3! So dont know what Stratstones were on about fitting pilot ss Also i was informed not to replace front or rear tyres individually if tread difference was going to be greater than 1mm on same axle as it poses risk of damage to xdirve an dif. Service an atleast 2 tyres every year it seems. Didnt say that in brochure either. |
