all about M8 battery

While waiting for my car I tried to locate information about the battery (s?) and it is still not clear to me.

So please answer my questions if you know this car.

1. Is main battery 12V? I've seen mentioning of 48V !
2. Is it AGM type battery?
3. Is it located under the hood?
4. Is there second battery?
5. Is second battery lithium type and located in the back?
6. Is second battery to support engine auto on/auto off function?

I plan to drive less than 3K a year so need to use battery maintainer.
If I maintain main battery will lithium battery charged as well or I need separate charger for lithium type batteries?

Thanks!
ps. I downloaded pdf manual for 2023 and didn't find answers.

Good call out it's easier that way anyway, I've also used the what I call cigarette outlet before too. Now called Auxiliary power outlet.

My 2 cents here:

Based on 14 years of experience maintaining a clients vehicle (several models). Currently a 2018 X5 MSport 40i.

-He purchased new in December 2018.
-Has 3075 miles on it to date.
-It is stored inside a garage but not climate controlled.
-They come her to visit maybe 1-2 times a year and use it then for short trips to golf course and groceries.
-In between their arrivals I probably start it 5 times (varying times maybe every 50 days) and let it run 10 minutes or so. I only move it a few inches to change the tire spot so we don't get a "flat spot shudder".

I do have the added benefit of a relative steady climate in Hawaii so it is usually always around 80 to 88 degrees.

Not criticizing the use of a charger here but if it's not needed. I have never used one in this application. If you are storing your car, and not even seeing it, or walking by it occasionally, then yes you should use one. But I come from the school of thought that it's better to start a car occasionally to lube and keep things moving. (of course, driving it a few miles would be even better).

Remember that even with the low miles you are expecting, BMW will want to service it every 12 months.Especially if you're still under warranty. Thats when they check your battery as well.

Wether you maintain the battery or not. They all have a life span. It is very likely that soon I will need to replace his battery due to the life of it, not because it wasn't maintained.

Hope I didn't confuse things...lol.

Yes and I agree. However, the M8 uses a Lithium Ion battery and it's very expensive to replace if/when it goes bad. That said, I've always read that LiOn batteries work best when not charged to 100% so if using a maintainer on an M car it should be LiOn specific and probably be on a timer so it only charges every so often. My 2 cents

Use this for your standard battery no need to maintain the secondary. https://www.amazon.com/CTEK-40-206-5...NsaWNrPXRydWU=
The battery maintainer you link to seems to be for lead acid batteries only. Wouldn't it be better to use one that has appropriate charging algorithms for LiOn batteries? Such as this one? https://www.amazon.com/CTEK-56-926-L...ef_=ast_sto_dp

Yes you are correct, not a AGM.

I am not an expert but I recall reading on here that using the cigarette outlet for charging is not recommended and to stick to the charging points.

I mean the only difference here is I use it as a trickle charger to maintain the battery, NOT to jump start it or quick charge. Either way that port is fused which would blow if too much current would be used. On my wives Porches it actually recommends it in the manual as a way to trickle chare, but I've been using things like that for years. It's 12vs at 2 -2.5amps the charge port typically has 10-15amp fuses so wiring is fine and it is directly back to battery. Ctek sells a connector for it too.

I wanted a luxurious car with a good amount of power to drive on weekends and take to Cars and Coffee. I looked around at a lot of different things and almost bought a C7 Z06 but I wanted more luxury than a Corvette offers.

Questions: What mode should the charger be on, the car icon or the AGM?https://smartercharger.com/collectio...s/ctek-mxs-5-0

I also don't see any CTEK chargers with both lithium capabilities and non, although both BMW's deluxe and cheaper one does https://www.shopbmwusa.com/ACCESSORI...TTERY-CHARGERS .

CTEK offers a lith charger but it's soley for lith https://smartercharger.com/collectio...tek-lithium-So

So what charging posts do they get connected to charge the lith? Even though the lith battery is under the hood, the charging posts under hood are for the AGM battery, correct?

I was using an AGM charger but switched to this one instead: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I connected the easy plug lead directly to the batter in the trunk and just plug it in when needed. It is long enough to stick out of one side so it's super easy to get too.

I forgot to add; AGM batteries are very flex able with charge and jumping, Lithium are sensitive to over voltage. Granted they have a controller built in for protection you don't want to over volt them.

AGM charges at 14.1-14.4v where as the two most common lithium batters charge at:
RELiON 14.2V 14.6V
ALLiON 14.4V 14.8V

Oh another interesting find on the BMW M8 breakdown of the battery system it says the Lion can be replaced by an AGM battery that follows same ratings. So if that can be located you could buy an AGM.... thought that was interesting. US Spec F91.

Thanks, but are the two charging posts (jump and earth) in the engine compt for the AGM or Lith? Does the lithium charger you reference also cover AGM, or is it lith only.

More info on the BMW advanced model which appears to differentiate between the lith and agm automatically.

I only looked up the M8 which only has one batter and it is Lion. Not sure about the M850i.....

According to the BMW manual jumping is only allowed from those posts upfront because they are protected on the positive side before the battery. So if the M850i only has one battery like the M8 you can trickle it from there as well.
