Raise your hand if you experience squeaky brakes when slightly braking and close to a stop? I'm told this is a common issue with pretty much all 840/M850 models.

M8s apparently a resounding yes based on several threads on the forum. At least for my 2020 M850i with roughly 11K in miles no squeaks whatsoever braking. Brake dust? Well that's a different story and at replacement time going with the Isweep 1500s.

I’m no expert, but don’t squeaky brakes have to do with them not being bedded in properly when new?

I bedded mine in on the ride home from the dealer, took the car up to speed and dropped it to 10mph several times in a row before hitting the highway to let them cool down. No problems here @2400 miles.

M850, yes, low speed squeal and high dust. And the pie tin rotors also look outdated on a modern GT coupe. Functionally, they work just fine… but in every other respect, these brakes are very disappointing for an 8 Series car.

840i M Sport GC with M sport brakes, 9.5k miles never had a squeak 😀

M8c with just over 12k miles here, I get occasional squeaking when the brakes are cold when lightly braking, was told by BMW service manager it was normal when the brakes are cold and there's brake dust on the pads.

It either happens extremely inconsistently or I can't hear it over the B&W so I'm not particularly bothered by it.

M8comp. Brakes squeak often, and it’s really a problem. Usually gets better after a wash, so I’m suspecting brake dust

Dealer says it’s normal, but I don’t understand how you can sell a car for so much money and have it do that

'20 m8c and the brakes squeak all the time. Wife can't stand it, but I don't mind it. Great brakes usually make noise.

Yea I finally switched to the isweep2000. I could not stand the sound. Embarrassing pulling up or coming to a stop. Car only had 9k miles. Isweep brakes have performed excellent since installing.

Ive been doing the bedding process on all my new cars for quite some time and it actually works well.

Right from delivery find some open safe space and run that car up and down with heavy braking- do this many times to deglaze the rotors. I probably run the car up to 100 plus and down to single digit speeds and back up maybe 6 to 10 times.

The squeaks come from owners who coast brake alot and creating that glaze (this is what a few techs told me) and the bedding process helps remove the glazing.

Now I did move to IS1500 pads but only to run away from the dust.

100% correct on bedding new pads. Super, super important. Good news is you can still do it even if they weren't done properly the first time. Just make sure you don't stop at a light with your foot on the brake after you do it. Drive for 5 - 10 mins without touching the brakes to let them cool down or you could warp the rotors. If you get a really strong smell of burning brakes you've done it correctly!

Thank you all for your feedback. If "bedding", as discussed in a few of the above posts, is what's needed then BMW needs to go back to the drawing board with their brake design.

Or they just bed them before delivery. That would be the right way to do it.

Yeah and in reality the function of the brakes works just fine but the aural issues drive people insane. I know BMWNA has seen tons of RO's from service centers and they just pay the dealer and move on.

I love my exhaust and radio- eliminates squeaks (if I had them) ahhahahahah

2020 M8, have 30,000 Miles, on third set of pads. Recommend you go to the track where M8 belongs. Guaranteed no squeal!!
Have never heard on bit of noise, unlike my Performance Friction pads PS11's on my E92 M3, which would squeal like a loud pig when pulling into the dealer service bay. Got perverse pleasure when people thought i was metal to metal.

I imagine bedding them is not a permanent solution for drivers who brake more gingerly on a regular basis. My family gets so annoyed with me when I drive like I'm enjoying the car. Lol.

Have you ever noticed the little card dealers leave around your shifter after a brake job? Says something about avoiding heavy braking for first 50 miles or so... So, I doubt the factory is going to violate their own mandate.

If they've been bedded properly once you should only need a a couple of hard stops to take the glazing off. I'll give it a try and report back as mine are squeaking pretty good right now...
