Once the iStep upgrade is cached on your phone the link from phone to car occurs using wifi direct. There's no need to pull the car outside to install the upgrade.

The only scenario where you'd want to consider leaving your car outside for a bit is when you've initiated the RSU download to start directly from iDrive (instead of the mybmw app). In this case your car uses LTE to download so having a better cell signal means the data can download more quickly.

In my case the RSU showed up for my 7 series first in the mybmw app. But no upgrade showed in the app for my 8 series. So, in my 8 I went into the RSU menu in iDrive and asked my car to check for an update. Sure enough it began downloading to the car directly. Took about 45 minutes then it was ready to install once I parked and had 20 minutes to allow it to complete the install.

Agreed as indeed the process to get the OTA to one's phone via the app and then upload it to the car. The satellite supposedly (stress that) according to get the car to trigger the actual OTA install once in the cars internal HD. Hence, the guideline to have clear line of sight to the sky, along with parking brake on, cool down period met, proper battery charge, etc.

I too cry foul on the clear line of site to the cloud but as stated it works in my garage nose in. I'll bet (and will test) if I back the car in the satellite will be dead just with total signal loss to SiriusXM.

Clear line of sight to the sky is bmw saying they want to avoid indoor cell signal issues. That's it. Nothing more.

Had to re-jigger a few things in idrive. Biggest thing was having my climate settings all put back to factory. No change in engine sound.

Drove around 15 miles. Everything seems fine.

My '23 M8C Vert does not have the advanced driver assistance systems and I've turned off the lane departure nuisance, err . . . feature. I've paid to have some coding done which I may lose.

So my simple question . . . is there any reason for me to install this "upgrade"?

I installed the update successfully with car fully in the garage and door closed.

Side note, anyone notice this after the update when turning the vehicle off and know what it means?

... because BMW software engineers worked long and hard to bring improvements and bug fixes.

Sure they likely created a few new bugs, but they hopefully fixed more than they created.

It's obviously your call to install or not. However I'm sure you're aware that there's many service situations where the dealer will apply an updated istep as part of the servicing procedure.

The update has been ready on my phone app for days, but I cannot figure out how to get the vehicle to accept it and download it. Any tricks to this?
Trying to get features coded but wanted to get this OTA update done first!

Remote start the car via the app, then when you get in it'll prompt the update.

^^ or jump into the car when it’s cold and do not start the engine. Go into iDrive menu Car settings. Scroll down to general settings . Scroll all the way down to remote software upgrade and follow instructions.

I did mine last night. Didn’t test much, but yes Climate controls seem to be reset. My individual car color now shows in iDrive. Yay. Biggest problem seems to be my remote start function disappeared from my app, and the 3-click function doesn’t work my my key fob anymore. I use it all the time in the winter.

Anyone knows how to restore that feature? I don’t feel like talking to the geniuses.

That doesn’t work, it says I’ll be notified when the update is ready to be installed.
Any thoughts? This is frustrating.

This also did not work when I did it last night. Do I have to do a song and dance when I get in the car?

You have re- enable remote start. You can find it in the climate control settings > preconditioning

You'll also have to redo all bimmercode changes you may have made

Maybe forget/delete you car in your phone’s Bluetooth settings and try pairing it again.

So this update has downloaded to my phone, but I've decided that I don't want to upload it to the car. IDrive gives me a notification prompting me for the upload every time start and end a journey. Is there any way to "tell" iDrive to cancel the update or at least to turn off the notification?

Very annoying how it’s so inconsistent across everyone’s vehicle. I can’t get it to ask me to upload ever when I’m in the vehicle

Still waiting (...crickets) for the install to take place. Will let you know if I end up with the same result. One interesting thing is the hard buttons for climate control in my 2020 M850i coupe are different than yours. Guessing a GC thing? Or did BMW just reconfigure for 2021s and beyond?

It's an enigma as to when the car decides to update. I'm still waiting and doing all the tricks (using full parking brake vs auto hold, going into diagnostics mode, etc.). After every drive the car likes to tell me after the proper 30 minute cool down it will be ready. Is that 30 minutes in sloth time as the car sits for 12 plus hours in the garage every night?

Turn off the auto connect for the car's WiFi in your phone as then it can't sense it. Works for me at least as WiFi is what is used to upload from the phone to the car.

The other tactic is in the app if you go into the OTA menu pretty sure there's an option to cancel the upgrade. At least I had that in the Android version of the app but now it's gone after the upload to the car.

I did my update this morning 2022 M8. I've only driven it for a little bit, but it seems the auto on/off function when the vehicle stops has changed. Default was set to inactive since I've had the car. Now defalt mode appears to be active and I have to turn it off or switch to sport mode to shut it off. Anyone else notice this?
