Vehicle software update via app

I appreciate that this may be old hat for many of you, however its a first for me and potentially some other owners.

I've regularly checked for vehicle software updates, both via the BMW Connected app and General Settings in the car. Nothing for almost a year (my one year anniversary is approaching).

Yesterday I noticed a message indicator on the BMW Connected app and checked to see that new vehicle software had been automatically downloaded to my phone. It was version 11/2019.70.

After starting up my car, a message appeared indicating a software update was ready for download and once I commenced driving it started to download. I had my phone connected via WiFi, and it all downloaded successfully in about 10 minutes.

Not bad I thought. Then I selected the information option to learn more about what was new in 11/2019.70. Disappointingly there is just a bunch of motherhood statements - words like optimized, improved, updated, better - but nothing specific for you to really know what will happen once the update is installed.

Given its now 06/2020 and reading about all of the other software upgrade issues, maybe being only on 11/2019.70 is a good thing, remembering Australia is a year behind for anything BMW.

Arriving back home, my car indicated the software was ready for install, and the procedure is wait until the countdown timer which appeared on screen completed and then press install, and leave the vehicle which I did overnight.

Another message this morning in BMW Connected to say the remote software upgrade is complete. This time with release notes. More rhubarb, nothing specific or insightful.

Later today I will start my car (hopefully) and report back.

Software update completed.

There was nothing really eventful to report, other than it worked. I've been unable to find any meaningful change or difference, which I sort of expected. It's not like a Tesla update.

All of my coding was still in place.

All drive recordings lost and drive recorder settings needed to be reinstated.

All apps deleted but re-installed themselves within an hour.

It was a non-event ladies and gentlemen.

Good news, though not for me. I’m still running the flawed 03/2020.30 and the response is: “Currently no update is available for your vehicle.”

So we have now two successful OTA updates (Noushy was the first to post) which is good news. I see based on the pics you got upgraded to 11/2019.70 from .30. Which once again confirms the theory that OTA is only for "point" releases in an overall iDrive software release. What still puzzles me is that I'm on 11/2019.55 but neither the app nor (https://www.bmw.com/en/footer/software-updates.html) tells me an update is available. Perhaps .70 is a market based offering and not available here in the US.

Interesting. Do you think it could be dependent on the options in the vehicles?

Still no upgrade showing in either my car or on the app on my phone.

I am still on 07.2019.47.

If I go to the connected drive on my PC I can see the release notes listed for the 11.19 version but see no way of getting it.

I have remote software 'booked' yet still nothing.

Anyone else still on this 'old' version without the offer of an upgrade ?

That could be the other reason beyond my first guess of a region based update. However, I suspect that your 2019 and my 2020 have literally the same options considering you have a successful Drive Recorder installation, B&W and all the rest of the toys.

The only difference may be that my 2020 allows you to see what the car "sees" in the digital cockpit when in full assistant driving mode. However, that's just a check box in the iDrive config so there should be no reason BMW can't deliver .70 to both a 2019 and a 2020 as on the 2019 the check box just wouldn't be available. Oh wait... that means BMW needs to know what they are doing software wise to recognize the recognize the hardware capabilities of the car.

Going back in the threads it looks like you picked up the 2019 M850i in early April of this year. With a 07/2019 iDrive release that means it was either built ironically in 07/2109 which was the last month of manufacturing or the iDrive software was updated by the dealer later in 2019. The irony is my 2020 M850i which completed it's build on 10/23/2019 came with 07/2019.47 as well so that was the latest version at the time. noushy's glorious M8C was built in November and came with the 11/2019 software as that was the latest at that point.

I didn't get my 11/2019 version until my dealer upgraded the software in December due to issues I was having with ConnectedDrive. It's interesting that we both see the 11/2019 release notes when logged into the ConnectedDrive portal on a PC given it is well known that 03/2020 is the latest version. Either way though you can't get from 07/2019 to 11/2019 (or 03/2020) via an OTA update. The OTA update is just a point release capability, e.g., your 07/2019.47 to something higher, e.g., 07.2019.70. The only way to get to a new build base release is for the dealer to install it.

I will call them up tomorrow and see if I can get it booked in. Maybe then I will finally get the driver recorded I paid for.

Thanks again for the heads up

BMW has always had this lousy policy that the dealerships had to have a service issue in order to update any of the software without charge to the customer. Even if it means you lose out on features. Sometimes my SA or tech have to make up a complaint like slow response or unable to connect phone or vehicle hesitates at stop in order to do it without incurring 2-3 hrs labor. Its just plain dumb but that is the way it is.

Thanks for the info and I guess its somewhat good and bad news depending on the perspective. For those looking for an upgrade it's definitely a bad policy from a customer satisfaction standpoint. The only upside is that for those whom are happy with their build, e.g., my 11/2019.55 do not have to worry about the dealer arbitrarily upgrading when in for a scheduled maintenance vs an issue with the system.

Just got the notice and updated my 2020 M850i GC to version 11/2019.70 yesterday. I was notified in BMW Connected App that it had been downloaded to my iPhone and later when I started my car, it said that it was ready to download to the car via Wi-Fi, which I did. It took just a few minutes and have noticed no difference in any saved settings or anything else for that matter. Have the same version of release notes on the Connected App that others have reported; they are generic and say nothing of value in about four pages. My 850 has a 2/20 production date.

Thanks for the update as it confirms that it isn't a region or model specific update. I guess it's just a slow rollout across the install base and likely not to overwhelm BMW's cloud servers. Just double checked my app to ensure remote software updates are enabled along with all push notifications. Fingers crossed I get it at some point.

Giving this thread a bump, I’m super confused to what the latest version we are supposed to have and what we need to do to get it?

Ywywmlt go to your BMW Connected app. On the info tab select remote software upgrade. If there is a software upgrade available for your vehicle then you can download and install yourself.

Other major software upgrades will be performed by your BMW dealer.

Software versions and version availability varies by model by country. See the other threads in this Forum on some of the latest experiences for US customers.

Thanks. Do I need an appointment or it can be done by just bringing it in?

I just updated to 11/2019.70 last week. I got the notification in my car and did it with my phone through the connected app. via wi-fi in my house. Then downloaded it to the car. Everything went fine.
