What the hell is BMW doing with its carbon fiber factory??? It's not like they are selling i3 and i8 by the boatload...They really missed the mark with 4500 lbs. Engine power and all wheel drive is good for straight line...

stunning car. Now i know the M850i will be the only available car this fall is USA, but can someone, anyone, (SCOTT26) confirm for me IF THERE WILL BE AN M840i! 140k for a fully loaded 850 is pushing it but i'd pay 100k for a moderately loaded 840.

for $85,000 you can get it pretty loaded, you can get a fully loaded M5 for $110K, maybe you meant M5? I can't imagine this having too much of a premium price to a 750xi, in fact I bet its right around $110K, price matching an M5 with options. And if I was spending $110K that would be a tough choice, more practical, higher power, full blown M car, or more stylish non full blown M Coupe... Thinking I would go M5 |

There won’t be an M840i but there probably will be an 840i. Probably starting out with RWD, without the active rear limited slip diff, adaptive damping, etc. with a lot of that stuff probably being available as options. Hopefully the most basic 840i will start below $100k in the US only because I’d love to see a lot of these cars on the road. I think it looks stunning and I’m really impressed by what I see and by the specs. In the space between sports cars like the 911 and luxury yachts like the S class coupe, this sounds like it finds the “BMW” middle ground between those two extremes nicely.

Is anyone here planning to take this to the track? :
An M5 is 4400lbs. Why is everyone shocked this car is 4500lbs? It's not a 911. It's a GT and perfect amount of power to weight. This is NOT a track car.

Yeap just like the ones in the G05 X5 & X7...I was at the Bmw event in the east Hamptons on Friday and sat in the car. It's definitely feels more premium on the inside and the cup holders are nice. It's a GT car not a 911

The Aston Martin DB11 is between 3900 to 4100 lb The Bentley Continental Coupe is 5100 lb The Mercedes S Class Coupe (non-AMG) is 4700 lb So in the grand scheme of things, at 4400-4500 lb, it's actually a lightweight among its competitors. |

After the excitement of the reveal subsides, I think this "8er" is underwhelming, and more fitting as a 6er.
Weight: The E31 was a pig, but it did have pillar-less design to make up for it. So this doesn't need to be light, but it's odd that this is heavy than the outgoing 6er in spite of being smaller. Does it really need to be AWD? Design: - Exterior: Front is neutered from the concept, lacks the cocaine-fueled sleekness of the original '80s design. Rear busy, the overall design looks like a Mustang/Camaro hybrid. - Interior: manages to be less luxurious than an existing older S-class, with the fingerprint-smudge-happy piano finish, and more plastic buttons than the S-coupe. M-badge on front fender looks like it's floating in no-man's land. As a 6 Series think it's fine, but the execution doesn't justify bringing the number (and price) up to an 8. The E31 wasn't successful, but aged gracefully--this looks a bit generic out the gate. |

I think they did a good job with the exterior design. They managed to make it classy and agressive at the same time.
Although I must say that the interior feels like a lazy approach. Nothing exciting sadly. That central dash could be so much better. They have managed to make the Idrive good enough and interesting so why not give the driver and the passenger more space to play around with it? I wish they could use some of the Porshce design where the air vents are lower down and the screen right over it. The whole media section where the volume knob and 1-8 buttons shouldn't even be there anymore. I have never used them, I do everything through the steering wheel. Further I wish they could introduce even bigger HUD options where more information can be seen, not that it's bad today. I wish they had a hybrid option also but then I guess it would be way too heavy. Although I don't understand how it can have "carbon core" and weigh that much. That rear seat section seems like an after thought. Don't understand really how it can be that cramped and smaller than a 4-series, hopefully the gran coupe will be better in that aspect. I must admit that I like the introduction of software updates OTA. |
