Looking for cheap, reliable, AWD, fuel efficient daily driver

I was just surfing through, this is something I always do when I have spare time, searching for a good DD.
I don't have 60 mile commute to work every day, and I don't stack up 4000 miles a month in my M3, but I was looking for a DD

requirements are

0. Under $8~9K
1. Fuel efficient
2. Reliable
3. good space (people, luggage at times, etc)
4. prefer AWD (NJ/NY all season)

One car I've been looking at for a long time is 05~09 Subaru Legacy 2.5i

I don't WANT a WRX or impreza, if similar price i'd rather get a little bit more refined, rommier car, and i do not intend to tune my DD (except maybe lower springs and Works/Volks wheels)

I don't NEED a 2.5GT because I want my DD to be fuel efficient.

Has anyone owned this vehicle as daily?
what's your comment?
I know Subies are very reliable...

I got mine for the winter season (2001 forester) and it's amazing what I can do in winter just on regular all seasons. Plowed through snow with my bumper, pulled a couple of bro-trucks out of ditches and it still manages 28mpg average. Mines been stupid reliable except for the head gasket (every n/a subaru has this after 100k). Mines a auto but I wish I got a stick. I'd recommend you go for an 03-04 xt stick and save the rest for mods and repairs.

2005 Ford 500 AWD. Volvo S60 chassis w/ Haldex AWD/CVT drivetrain. Inexpensive, very roomy, reliable, cheap to insure, mid 20's MPG. It may need the top motor mount bushing replaced.

Truly a tank with a lot of room and modest features for an 05.
Simple...I like that.
However...
He mentioned lowering and wheels as the only modifications.
Pretty sure he is 20 something and would not be seen in a 500..lol.

Can't go wrong with Subaru. Get a Legacy(wagon is a great choice if you need a lot of room for stuff), Outback(basically Legacy wagon with higher ride height), or Forester with 2.5 NA engine.

I've only owned an STi but have driven a few Legacy's and my best friend owned a 2007 Legacy for 5 years or so. They are reasonably nice in the inside, very comfortable, and reliable as hell.

Meets all his requirements that he said he wanted. I think Steeda can offer a suspension kit. Maybe the SHO suspension still fits....
