Retrofit CID to LCI version

Hello,

i am just wondering if and how a retrofit of the Central Information Display (CID) to the newer LCI version could be done at a BMW M8 Competition.

As you can see in the attachement, the new bigger LCI display looks more "modern" like the normal one, so I am wondering if this could be retrofit without any problems.

The NBT wasn't upgraded in the LCI, so normally this should work or?

Side Question: is the new LCI display in 12,3" also with touch functionality?

Maybe someone has an idea

I have no input to help you with this, but wanted to say thank you for posting the side by side picture. Personally the larger one looks super tall and bulky to me in that cockpit.

I agree. Too me it looks outta place. It looks like they needed to jump on the band wagon and get a big screen in there no matter what. Screen size seems outta control among many brands. The bigger screen need to run down vertically imo. They look better that way. If it's up too high it just looks goofy.
But to be honest I'd still like to see it first hand to really know. Sit there and see how it looks. Seeing it easier would be nice though.
I guess a complete dash rethink was way too much to consider. So just glue a bigger one on.

If you look at the screen orientation to the wheel, I don't think it is that much taller. The sides are squared off and the screen uses more of the available space.

I've been trying to buy one of these to try a retrofit, but the screen is not yet available as an individual part. I am being told hopefully in the next few weeks.

Too me that is what makes it look taller. lol its not a fair view since the pics are not exactly a match. I too would like to see one in person.

Based on the pictures the width at the base of both screens appear to be identical. So in theory it all comes down to the more square larger screen in the LCI vs the "trapezoid" top in the original. However, it's unclear based on the picks if the center console molding bracing both sides of the screens that blends into the dash has been modified in the LCI to accommodate the larger more square screen.

Interesting that BMW's top interior designer (lead for the I series and new 7-series) is quoted "I'm personally convinced that these black glass surfaces in the car interiors are… we will leave that behind, sooner or later."

https://carbuzz.com/news/top-bmw-des...reens-are-over

To that point I think the original iDrive CID in the 8-series is more ergonomic than the taller/larger screen in the LCI.

Totally agree... The giant screen in the new 7-series looks terrible IMO

While I think I'm looking forward to my larger screen (its about the only noticeable change in the LCI M8) it would be nice if they made some kind of better use out of the extra space. Instead everything just has a little more room I assume. Its not like AndroidAuto will have an additional column of functions

The 8 had the litest of lite LCIs. Even the 3's LCI will move to the entirely new iD8 interior (for better or worse). I think that we all have to admit what that means for the future of the 8.

I've been surprised that no one has noted the other equally big change on the 8's LCI - the door lock and seat memory switches changed from black to silver.

I mean, I don't know how you are living with that black plastic crap. Silver plastic is so much better. Clearly trumps the B&W.

The silver plastic adds 5hp straight to the wheels

Outside of first setting my seat position the car recognizes from my key I've had to deal with the black plastic crap when only unlocking the door for the wife in the rare occasion she's along for the ride. Could change comfort settings to open both doors on entry but given the 95/5 use case haven't bothered to do so.

Now I can explain the upgrade to the wife with a cool silver door unlock button when she's in the car. Not sure she's going to buy that argument. 🤣

Throw in the aftermarket red volume knob and it may be more like 10hp to the wheels.

I think at this point you'll have to try to explain away the benefits of upgrade my friend.

I think when she sees the sun brilliantly glinting off that silver trim your argument will be made for you. Bring a flashlight in case it's overcast when you show her though just to be safe.
