One would think the M850i or the 8-series in general has the same insulation. Perhaps even post neutering the M850i exhaust is still louder then the M8 (which seems ass backwards) but I can hear it in my Sport Individual setting with the widows up as long as the stereo is at the default setting (guessing 20%).

It's what I enjoy most when the wife is in the car with me as I can't crank the B&W so the gurgles/burbles and pops are the symphony for those drives. 🤣

The neutered exhaust software coding affected both m850 and m8. But it reduces both to the same "quiet" db levels. So it's more dramatic for m8, but similar for both.
The sound "insulation" is similar for both; but the m8 has a few more braces that reduce some noise and rattles. But it's very similar on both.
The torque is identical for both and most components are used in both; except for some dramatic differences like the engine.

Has anyone found a actual sound clip of the BMW M Performance Exhaust?

My car lists an M sports exhaust as a competition feature
So M performance exhaust is additional and adds a little sound?
Then what does the regular m8 come with?

Btw I’m happy with the m sports exhaust. It has a great start up sound, good depth and a roar/burble in high M modes with aggressive driving. Overall it does sound a bit subdued at times and it would be nice to have it sound like a v8 performance car a bit more during regular driving. But I wouldn’t pay much extra to have that

To answer original question, performance gain is likely irrelevant
There is no regular M8 anymore. Every M8 comes with the competition package, which comes standard with the M sport exhaust" which is just a different muffler and black tips.

The M performance exhaust is a completely different full catback exhaust system, that is much louder and does increase performance, especially when combined with a tune.

Kewl, now wonder why it’s not an option or otherwise how does one buy it?

You can easily resell the M Perf exhaust. I got $6,000 for my last one used.

It is an option. Sometimes you can add it on the website, other times you have to have a mgr at bmw manually add it to your order so it's installed at the port.

I’m building an M8 coupe now. I’m glad I read this. I didn’t realize
But the car I test drove had the $8k M performance exhaust option. I drove a GC and it didn’t sound the same. Now i know why.

Hoping the option is still available for 2024.

One point — the M8 i drove with the MPE option had an exhaust button that really made a big diff in the sound (not so much on the one I drove without MPE) and I think really enhances the versatility of the car. I’m trading a Ferrari FF with a V12 — and this may be my last non-electric car — it better sound good!!

The M850i I believe has a different exhaust manifold , that's what makes it sound different from the m8 competition. Also , I believe the tailpipe trims on the n850i being like a tunnel , make the echo sound more . The M8 competition exhaust tips stick right out . What would happen I wonder IF the tailpipes of the M8 competition were short like the M850i and had a hollow box to echo out from ???

I actually installed the m8 comp exhaust on my m850i. The sound is Def better, louder for sure with more subtle burbling now.

On my old M5 (2018), the part numbers for the competition sport exhaust vs base was simply the resonator. The rest of the catback was the same

I doubt BMW deviated from that formula on the M8. Remember the part numbers for the coupe will be different from the GC. But I believe the catbacks will be the same on all the M8 cars. Resonator being the only difference between the standard vs Msport exhausts.

Now the M performance exhausts are a whole different matter.

I’m trying to decide on exhaust. I was leaning towards Akrapovik or M Performance, but now Valvetronic has there’s out and claims it sounds stock with the valves closed. Just looking for guidance and opinions. I love a good exhaust sound, but also want to make it quieter when I need to and I’m not sure I can do that with the M Performance.
Can anyone with M Performance exhaust installed on their M8 confirm if the exhaust button does or doesn’t do anything with the sound? On the M Sport exhaust, the cold starts are not as loud when the exhaust button is not on, so I’m wondering if it’s the same with the M Performance. Thank you in advance.

I have Valvetronic's stainless line and can agree it sounds very stock with the valves closed. I also use their controller to turn them closed or open on command so I can be quieter when I need it to be. I can probably end up doing a video at some point when I get back home from travel to show you the difference. And hopefully when the new system they offer comes in I'll install it and do video as well for that. Not ETA right now though.

Pulled the trigger on the Valvetronic titanium exhaust. Should have it installed a week from today.
