Pretty sure what they were originally referring to was the M850i logo that was missing two of the M colors on the badge.

There is no different font. The Mxxx models are just flat and lack the ‘bevel and emboss’.

Not sure what exactly you are comparing, but there obviously is an M specific font for all M and M Performance versions (badges and recently digital dials, see new M5), thick, square, flat and upright (and Cerium Grey on M Performance). Versus the traditional BMW thin, italic, beveled font used on all regular models, with the exception of the new Z4 which seems to have introduced a font of its own.

Maybe I misunderstood what was being compared, but I was comparing the 8 in 840i with the 8 in M8.

Same font, but 3D bevel/embossed instead vs flat.

Ok the 4 is very different obviously. Didn’t see much ‘4’s’.

But on the older models, pre “lets use every number” era, they did this.

Just for fun trace just the outline of both 5’s and you’ll see. Ok so one is italic and more rounded corners, but same overall design. Just like within a font family you have bold, italic, condensed, etc.

Those 5s are as 'same overall design' as any 5s from two random fonts are - an S with a flatter top bar, which is what a 5 is in most font types. The BMW traditional font numbers however are inscribed within rounded off parallelograms, while the M specific numbers have an angular barrel shape design.

It's pretty cool they are now extending the M font to the instrument cluster dials.

That's an interesting "3". Guess I have been out of the new models for too long.

Didn't know they restyled it.

This is the one I'm familiar with
