Why is this car so cold start happy?

Just wondering—other recent high performance German cars I’ve owned have all taken a fairly long time before needing to do a cold start again after leaving the car parked for a little while.

But for some reason the M850i, even after being parked for seemingly 10 minutes, goes back to a full cold start.

Anybody else notice that? Why is this car so cold start happy? Do the cats cool down THAT fast in this car?

I’ve faced the same in my M8… even at the running temp if you leave the car for 10mins it starts it in cold start and have to wait until the rpms drop… I have decided to delete the cold start with the tune

Exhaust note show off? Doesn’t Porsche do the same?

My 911 was definitely not this bad.

I remember, at least in warm weather, being able to leave it for a while (30 or even 40 min) without it doing a cold start

I don't think I've noticed the short turnaround time, but there are often times where I'll put it into sport plus before I turn the car on just for the added excitement.

But it’s not even a roar. With OEM set up, cold start is not very loud.

I actually like how it sounds at startup more when there isn’t a cold start. I have it set up with the most aggressive setting at all times. So when it’s not a cold start you get a much nicer little burble, and a bit of a pop. I like that sound much more

The car is happiest when the engine is warm. Especially the catalytic converters. Gotta heat fast and then play

Do you switch to Sport Plus or in my case Sport Individual (engine on Sport Plus and transmission on Sport) before starting?

Granted the warm start is more aggressive but even cold starts pop and gurgle to my neighbors chagrin as the garage helps echo them. 👍

^ No, I haven’t tried that. I will, though.

Does your car have an exhaust? Sorry, but with OEM exhaust this car is NOT loud, not even close, by any setting, and unless your neighbors have a severe case of hyperacusis of the ears, any notion that the startup bothers them is probably all in your mind!

I do that when I want to sound extra growly to everyone around me.

So I did a cold start with my car in Sport Plus mode and it sounded no different than a regular cold start.

It starts differently with pops and bangs when engine is at running temp
