Phantom collision avoidance

2022 M850i 950kms

Yesterday my car suddenly swerved to the left and displayed a message about collision avoidance. It happened 2 times within 10 seconds. Today on the highway it did the same thing. It's not enough of a swerve to run you off the road, but it does get your attention. I stopped by the dealership the other day and they said something about the camera causing a fault, but they reset it. I'm going to take it back tomorrow and leave it there the whole day.

Has anyone else ever had a phantom collision avoidance swerve? At least it didn't slam on the brakes (yet!).

I haven't had the issue described, but I have experienced some corrections that felt overly aggressive. As a cyclist, I'm convinced this technology is what will end me some day.

I’ve experienced similar side collision warning behavior in my ‘19 M850i. It has falsely detected curbside garbage bins, etc. and made quick but minor adjustment. I hated that, so I turned off this function in iDrive. I have since discovered that this is one of the active safety features that is turned back on if I use cruise control with steering wheel assist… it’ll detect an occasional guardrail and activate the side collision avoidance and dashboard warning. I’m disappointed that it doesn’t work better, even though these features were not important in my selection of the car.

Literally the first change I make in iDrive settings is to turn off all the "active" safety features. I love driver safety warnings. I hate when the car thinks it can avoid them better than I can.

I never had any issue until I accidently drove over a collapsed wooden road barricade in a parking lot 2 days ago. I don't know if that's related or not. There is no apparent damage to the vehicle.

Have only had the side collision warning once and was just a couple of months back when on a road trip. Car was in full Driver's Assistant mode so just hands on the steering wheel (with enough pressure) and looking forward. Car was pretty much just driving itself with me maneuvering around pot holes, etc.

Warning lit up and sure as hell the car in the next lane to me was literally almost out of their lane. Technically it was rear side collision warning but thankfully the other driver goth their proverbial crap together and moved over before getting any closer.

As previously stated d before one can adjust the lane departure settings and whether just a vibration on the steering wheel or the car can make an "adjustment". Granted it is a different setting vs the collision warning which I do not believe can be overridden if you have the full boat for Driver Assistance packages.

I've played with them all, e.g., you can specify small, medium or large (actual setting nomenclature escapes me at the moment) but the default "medium" works best. I leave it on with "adjustment" vs just vibration as once accustomed to it the result is far from over aggressive. It's saved my bacon more times than I can count at this s point when distracted via the cellphone, the wife in the passenger seat demanding attention, etc.

Granted if your tracking the car probably want it off and in full control (and associated attention). On the daily drive however I for one find it a godsend of technology I wouldn't want to live without.

Wow that's not good! I've had my car stop abruptly going in reverse, which made me think I hit something when I didn't. I have mine on low, with no steering wheel intervention. The other day I had a loaner 330i and if I forgot to use my blinker when changing lanes it would swerve me back into the lane and with my driving and maneuvering it was more dangerous…

OPs scenario is a rare one and sounds like it ties back to a defective/faulty camera. As for your reverse aka backing up scenario that has happened several times for me backing out of my garage. However, the cars doing what it should as it will stop before impact.

In my case there is a shrub next to the driveway on my side that if not properly trimmed it will trigger the PDC at a minimum as yellow. Forget to trim it and ultimately it triggers at the dark orange (next is red) and it will put the brakes on.

Irony had to run an errand today so took this pic before backing out. Our 2 car garage is a bit tight with the X5 and M850i so I suck the left hand side with room to get out so my wife has easy access out of her X5 without worrying about hitting the M850i.

Offensive bush can be seen and needs some trimming.

Yep AZ bird of paradise bush that grows like a weed and was in place when bought the house in 2002 but could be from the early 80s when it was built.

Should have also called out that it won't activate unless you're at 40MPH or greater.

I think you are correct. After more than a week of behaving itself, it happened again today. A truck was slightly ahead of me in the right lane and I was in the left lane. The truck was also at least 6 feet away, it wasn't close.

I'll make an appointment at the dealership.

Hi, I have a 2022 M850i xDrive and have experienced 5 of the phantom side impact collision avoidance issues. Approximately 2 weeks ago, in slow traffic, I had 3 occurrences within a 10 minute period with the car abuptly steering to the left all times. I believe that there must be a faulty sensor (or faulty programming logic).

With all occurrences the were no other car within 30 feet of my car.

Unfortunately nothing is showing up using the diagnostic scanner at the local BMW dealership.
