We have some similar bullshit here in NY concerning leaf blowers... but bikers with no mufflers or pollution control are AOK!

"....clearly emit an offensive, harsh, excessive noise or"

WELCOME TO 2019, where exhausts can be harsh and offensive to the new generation of millennial snowflakes... oops sorry I mean our beloved kids that we're raising

Yeah exactly... I don't think any laws should be made against car exhaust noise level until a Harley ripping down the street doesn't cause physical ear pain...

Meh. Who cares. You can buy your way out like any law, so it only effects those who are truly a nuisance.

Laws of that sort are pretty much unenforceable, because cops don't have the gear required or the skill necessary to do the testing. It's not as simple as just holding a meter to see what it reads. Those who write the regulations think it's that easy, but cops know better, and so do defense lawyers, who will get 99.9% of those tickets dismissed. Cops don't like wasting their time writing tickets that get tossed, so they just don't bother to write them.

A power mower is about 94 db. My Roadster is much louder than my 435i with MPPK and the M Performance muffler. I autocross my Roadster and we record sound during an autocross. I don't recall my exact numbers, but it is between 70-75 db. I really don't think installing an MPPSK will be anywhere close to 95 db.

I find it dumb how everyone is over reacting over this video due to the original was taken before this new law even took place lol everyone sounds dumb.

Modified Exhaust Law in CA in 2019

Just wondering if this would include MPPSK as that is a factory part and can be port installed even before taking delivery of the vehicle. Also, I believe the 95DB rule still applies. Apparently it's to tackle the street racing and intersection donut takeovers that have been happening.

Wondering what you guys think.

It might depend on if you are letting off gunshots while decelerating in low gear after WOT. Those can be heard from like a mile away so maybe take it easy or run in comfort mode if you spot cops.

So they just measure 20" away at idle?
The only time my Akra is somewhat loud is around 1,800-2,200 RPM.
.
As for Laguna Seca, remember, different events have different sound limits. The 92dB days are pretty much stock exhaust only.

Let me get this straight... You are swapping out parts designed by some of the top engineers in the world because some guys sponsored by a company told you it's "better??" But when you ask the same guy about tracking, "oh no, I have a kid now" or "I just detailed my car." or "i just got new tires."

Yea 20" away from the exhaust at some 45 degree angle. The standard suggest somethign like 50-75% RPM of max red line but a lot of new cars don't let you do that when stationary anymore. I can't find any proper information on these that do not require buying the standard J1169 from SAE.org.
(Typo with 68 in my early post).

Yea, its really sad for Laguna, since T5 is uphill and chances are the car is full throttle high RPM at that point where the sound booth takes it reading. There is a reason these exist:

Speaking of Laguna, the days I've been attending in the past year there have been 90 dB days! Even lower than that 92

Lime Rock has a limit of 86db most days which majority of cars meet, straight piped track cars have these crazy bolt on mufflers to get to that. An MPE alone will definitely be under 96 Sound measurement is also heavily dependent on proximity to the source, so if you're a little over it's likely to be fine. This obviously doesn't account for the 911 trigger happy neighbors fed up with obnoxious straight piped cold starts every morning.

At what distance? SPL goes down by 6dB with each doubling of distance from the source, up by 6dB with each halving of distance. At what RPM? Idle, midrange or full throttle? Is that an A-weighted or C-weighted result? In the low frequencies there can be as much as a 50dB difference between the two. Your eardrums can be pounded into mush by low bass while an A-weighted meter won't even register it. These are just a few of the variables that make a simple statute unenforceable.

As long as your modified exhaust is less than 95dB, you should be ok. if you choose m-perf as an option, keep your window sticker in the book case. banning ALL aftermarket exhausts cannot be done because OE's stop making parts for cars after some point and the only option is an aftermarket one. so as long as you don't have a stupid loud fart can, you'll be fine.

I wonder which exhausts for the M2 meet this restriction. Assuming stock cats of course
