1968 Shelby GT 500 KR Convertible at Auction with Heritage Auctions

This car is part of our TV pilot produced for ABC by Cineflix Productions, in association with Heritage Auctions so there is a chance the winning bidder may be on TV.

1968 Shelby GT 500 KR Convertible #3732. A superbly restored original car with 31,000 original miles. Highland Green with a black top and black interior.

The car was restored, circa 1980s, with mostly the original parts of the car. Reproduction Shelby 10 spokes appear to have been added at that time. The car's body components are of matching date codes and the serial number tag is original to the car. The car has its original Cobra Jet engine with all of the correct components including the oil cooler. The car has been stored since its high caliber restoration and had oxidation to the original aluminum parts typical of an older restoration. (The car has been freshened to restore the car back to at least near full concourse level.) With very little work, this would be an excellent, top flight show car.

This highly optioned car is a rare combination. In addition to the original cobra jet engine that is standard with the KR model, the car has an automatic transmission, air conditioning, Glass rear window, tilt wheel, visibility package, and the scarce AM/FM radio, too. In addition to these options the car is equipped with the correct smog equipment including the air cleaner snorkel that is exceptionally rare on 428 Super Cobra Jet cars.

The Marti report has 11 KR convertibles built in this Green, black, and black combination but does not include the air conditioning or smog equipment which would make the car much rarer. This was the only Shelby like this that was delivered in Canada. At this time, the air conditioning appears to be factory but remains a mystery. It does not appear to be a dealer add on unit. The Car has the Home Office Reserve ordering district under Domestic Special Order (DSO) number of 8D2998.

Although not a "barn find" this car has reappeared after being out of sight for decades. This is a rare opportunity to purchase a car that has been sitting in private hands for many years. The car has been inspected and shows no accident or other history problems. The car is shown in the Shelby registry as

8T03R210348-03732. GT500KR. Shipped to Rankin Ford Sales, Ltd. (London, Ontario, CAN) 11/15/68. Letter dated 1-30-69 from Shelby Automotive applied for by Rankin Ford Sales for convertible incentive claim for two vehicles at $200.00 each for credit. Last known owner Jeffrey S. Gilbert (Los Angeles, CA).

Highland Green, Black interior, auto, and hub caps from the factory. The latest information has been provided to Shelby registrar.

This Shelby is so highly optioned that it fits the description as being "The King of the Road." Heritage will donate a portion of the hammer price to the Carroll Shelby Foundation. CarrollShelby.com

Mike Demille, the consignor of this beautiful automobile, has had a love for vintage cars since he was five years old. Growing up with a collector father, who built race cars and drove a 1956 Ford pick-up around town, you could say that great cars are in his blood. Over the years Mike and his father have owned and restored their share of vintage cars. In 2003, Mike's friend, a private collector, told him about this Shelby. From the minute he laid eyes on the car he was in love. Mike said that, growing up, he never thought he would have the opportunity to own Shelby, so when the opportunity arose, he couldn't pass it up. Now, after eight years of enjoyment, Mike has decided to let another collector know the joy.

Note: We expect this lot to come up for auction at approximately 12:15 pm Pacific Time. Lots are planned for approximately every 15 minutes but could vary and be faster or slower. Check HA.com/live to track the progress of the auction

Link should be fixed. How do you like your 135?
