1966 big block corvette carb question

currently my 66 big block vette is not doin so hot... the carb is leaking gas and I am a bit baffled as to what to do to fix it. my mechanic (conveniently not in arizona where i live) believes it to be a stuck float in the carb... attempted to walk me through the steps of fixing it and I just cant seem to get it all together.

anyone run into something similar? anyone in the arizona area have a recommended mechanic that would be able to come to my spot and fix this?

carbs are not my strong point and when it comes to these older cars its a bit tough because parts are more brittle from age so I'm weary of getting too far into something I'm not great with...

Unless you find an easy fix, you may want to consider rebuilding the carb, all new gaskets and such. You may even have a hole in your float allowing it to fill up with gas and not float.

I would hate to see that car burn, get it fixed asap

Very nice, but you can get some nice carbs for cheap now. I'd save the mechanic $$ and put it towards a new carb.

Why not get a carb rebuild kit? I think Holley sells them. They come with a new float, jets, needles, all the gaskets, bronze screws, springs, and diaphragm.

Heres a link to the kits for many diff carbs:

update:

took apart the carb - the pins on top had some leaking gaskets - kit was used to replace the gaskets and due to the amount of gas leaking I had a worry the gas had blended a bit with my oil so drained all the oil and put a new filter in (car had an engine rebuild about 2000 miles ago when I put straight pipes on) and am now back up and running! about perfect timing too as my az "winter" has just begun so I have perfect temps to take the car out!

and what better combo to have than an e90 m3 dct as my daily and my 66 big block vette as my weekend and cruising toy?!

thanks to you all for the advice and help!

Nice! I'm glad you found the problem. I had just stumbled across this thread for the first time, I guess I missed it before... But yeah, I had the same issue a while ago with my 454 using a Holley double pumper, and the problem ended up being the gasket around a pin. Like everyone else said, rebuilding a carb is never a bad idea when you've got a leak.

That's a badass Corvette. I'm jealous.

thanks man! my dad is a corvette and older car buff - he had a 65 coupe in college and dyno'd out around 550 hp - mine is all original numbers matching with only 40,000 on the engine at present. it was a frame off resto but the engine is 2 off the original. meaning all numbers match but its not the original engine its the original engine from a car 2 back on the assembly line.

I have the original exhaust manifold and pipes but have taken them off for headers and straight pipes at present... def a blast!
