Yup, quite a few cases across this forum and also a friend with an X3 - filters get clogged if the wrong stuff is used and bmw won’t cover under warranty. There is a particular component that causes the problem but I forget what it is! Possibly silicone?

I haven’t been in that position but anecdotally it isn’t that simple in newer models - my X3 owning friend had a bill approaching £200 even though he bought his X3 via BMW Approved and never went near the washer bottle himself.

Washer fluids with claims such as de-icing, bug and tar, etc should be avoided. These fluids contain additives designed to add a coating to the windshield. This coating can get on the electric sensor in the washer reservoir and block the electric pulse that flows between the sensor pins.
Some affected claim sensor replacement was needed, others say they resolved the issue by flushing out the reservoir (likely several times) to clear the chemical product. Seems BMW, Mercedes and VW products are on top of the list of affected cars.

Yep exactly what I purchased and just followed the diluting instructions for my region. Wife's X5 had a washer fluid leak that tied back to the pump. So lived with this solution (pun intended) until I finally got a good deal for replacing the pump with my dealer. Original estimate was $1K and told them to pound sand. Had it in earlier this month for some 60K miles service and negotiated $600 which is what an independent shop quoted me. They even threw in the wiper blades replacement (originally $60) for free as well as otherwise I would have walked out the door.
