^ Saw that.

The M850i performed pretty well, considering that it was up against the likes of a GTS, which is a rocket.

Plus I disagree with Matt Watson that the AMG’s rev sounded better than it. The Jag sounded the best.

That M850i sounds like it was in comfort mode. If I put mine in sport+ it sounds far more aggressive. Mine is completely stock as well.

I saw it too and he said the Jag won the sound test ... unless we watched a different video

I had an F Type R and it indeed sound like it was firing daggers... very aggressive. And yes the GTS is shockingly fast for its hp/tq levels- 11.3 with the roof down in an impromptu race and RWD- says alot.

^ Oh, I know that he said the Jag sounded best. But he also said that the AMG sounded better than the M850i and the GTS, and that was the part that I disagreed with. I thought the 8 series sounded just as good, if not better, than the AMG.

Of course, I watched it in video and Matt Watson was there in person, so........I'm guessing the sound just didn't come through to my TV?

Nah I just read your text as if you were saying that Mat felt the Benz was best overall--- we are aligned

The hot v8 of the Benz does have a quite a bit of ferociousness though but its not as good as the Jag. I had 3 hot V 4.0's: C63S, AMG GTS, and an E63S- and while there were things deficient in those cars; the exhaust was not one of them.

I did a few revs of the M850i that I test drove (and am looking at buying) as well. Love the crackles and pops

While it doesn't sound as glorious as the V10 on my R8 (with straight pipe titanium exhaust), that's ok. It isn't supposed to

Was going to post but beat off the line (pun intended) to do so. Given the power to weight ratio my $ was on the Jag or the Porsche. Had to LOL that Yanni had no clue it wasn't a 4 GTS but at the end of the day he made it work.

Not a bad showing whatsoever for the M850i as it needs a weight loss diet. Fun outcome nonetheless but the AMG being the clear loser although apparently it has some good heating. 😜

I spent a week with an F-TYPE R and if it not as loud, I sure as hell couldn’t tell. There’s a few sound clips in my review.

Did you happen to ever drive say the 2017 R or SVR?? Sounds is way different for the new designs when compared to those older models. Sad because that thing was such a beast. Note I'm not saying it sounds bad now, still sounds good but damn that thing was a monster from factory. Makes me wonder if I should hunt another one down.....

I haven’t driven an older one, but now you have me intrigued because I thought that R was LOUD at WOT. Coming from an M3 with straight pipes no less.

Did you ever drive a new one? Main difference is valves are closed until 4k rpm, after 4k sound is identical. I pulled the fuse on my 21 so valve is no longer closed and always open…it’s loud lol.

Jag is still pretty nice at end of life though it’s been neutered in final form. That’s the only one I’d consider here. If you are going to buy a cruiser get the one that looks and sounds the best and has a hidden compartment for stealing cutlery.

Yeah I went to buy one the first year they came out with the new design bc I missed my 17.... First test drive and the overnight one they let me have I was unimpressed..... However I did not know the fuse solution.

It’s a European car so it’s had its sound robbed by OPF filters.

MB didn't deliver with new SL. The SL55 is a compromise to attract buyers and the 63 model just underperformer for $200K+.
Hopefully they recognize the start was not great and do quick second gen SL with improvements to compete with P cars.

The problem as I see it, from a performance standpoint, is that the SL is just so morbidly obese. The ~800 lb weight penalty prohibits it from competing with any 911 variant, regardless of its high HP and mounds of TQ.

This post got me to thinking…

I have a MY2023 840 and want my valve to stay open so do you happen to know if that’s also just a matter of pulling a fuse? And if so, do you know how I can find out which one?

Thanks!

No rolling starts?
With regard to sound, I agree with the Jag...I had two XKR's and one with performance exhaust and it frightened women and children.

Never mind on this question. I just figured out that the Engine setting in iDrive is actually the exhaust sound so Sporty keeps the valve open. Not sure why BMW called it Engine. Should be Exhaust. I thought that setting controlled the piped in noise…
