840i gran coupe?

A new arrival to the family means my 4 series convertible just isn’t practical enough any more. This might sound like the most ridiculous ‘which car should I buy?’ but I was just about to order an x3 30d when the dealer asked if I’d considered an 8 gran coupe and then thanks to dealer contributions, offered me one for the same money as the x3.

Main criteria for me is being able to fit the golf clubs or a pram in the boot and a baby seat in the back...

Pretty sure the answer is going to be an 840i but for those who have one, how much do you love it?

If you can get an 840GC for the same money as an X3...run, don't walk, back to the dealership! LOL!

I've had mine since March of 2020, and fall in love with it daily. The fit and finish is top of the class. You won't regret it!

I find it to be very spacious. Kids are in the works, so I did look for youtubes or other posts on space for car seats and all seem to show that it can fit a wide variety of seats. I have a friend with an M8GC and two kids under 5. Both seats fit comfortably in the rear and he is 6'7" and his wife is about 6'1". Not sure about clubs, but just eyeing it makes me think it would work.

If he's able to do a similar contribution on a new build vs in-stock car, check to see if the individual color promo is still available as well. I mean, an 8 series in any color you want over an X3? Run back indeed.

I would say you'll certainly be happy with the ride quality and how much road noise is reduced in the 8 over the X3 as well. Some blissful minutes of isolation are priceless when you have a ringing in your ears from a screaming newborn.

I have baby seats in the back of my m850i convertible; and I can still fit 2 sets of full golf clubs in the trunk with the top down.

Congrats Stav! I've had the same conundrum but on an m340i vs an 840i - with toys (HUD, electric seats, HK etc) the 8 is cheaper but I'm debating if I'd prefer the power on the m340 and the lighter chassis versus the comfort and awesome look of the 840

Congrats! I have had mine since late August that I picked up with just 5,000 miles on it.

I love it. I came out of an F80 M3 and wanted something different. Really spacious, luxurious but surprisingly quick for such a big car.

Handling obvioulsy doesn't compare to the M3, but then I didn't buy it to sling it round corners and roundabouts

May take you while to get used to the size. It is big - and wide. Wider than the X7 IIRC.

Enjoy!

From what I’ve read online, it has the widest wheelbase of any car they make.

I’ve had a nagging feeling since last night that I’m buying the wrong car, I think down to COVID and not being allowed to test drive at the moment, not even sit in one and I’ve never really seen one on the road either. I had never considered an 8 until the dealer threw this curveball at me yesterday and it’s so vastly different to the SUV’s I was considering so I went down to my local dealer and took a good look at the exterior and it is absolutely stunning. I’m sure i’ll love it once I have it.

I don't think you will regret it, but will depend on how you drive and what you are looking for. If you want a comfortable but quick, luxurious car that will almost drive itself, the 8er is for you. I have had BMWs all my life and the difference in build finish between the 3/4, 5/6 and 7/8 is very noticable, IMHO.

What spec? Any extras?

Mine's petrol
And although our petrol is super expensive, at least it is 95 minimum, and 97-99 is available for a small premium

It seems to vary from one country to another. In Germany and in the UK the configurator also "offers" the 840i in REAR-wheel drive flavor. Whereas in other countries the latter is not available when configuring a new vehicle (all being XDrive)

I’ve gone for the 840i in carbon black and ivory leather. All of the toys I wanted (H&K, HUD, digital cockpit etc) are standard on the 8 so the only thing I’m looking to add is a black grille. I would have added a panoramic roof but with a new baby I’m trying to keep costs down. I had an e89 z4 before my 4 series and a 1 series before that, so I’m skipping a few upgrades with this but I’ve driven my dads 7 series a few times and enjoy that. Most of my driving is on the m25 too, which this will be perfect for, it’s just how big it will feel on all the country roads that I have where I live.

Those inline 6's are sweet sounding, very powerful for thier size, and inherently so smooooth!

I went from an F30 335d to an 840i GC and haven't regretted it for a minute. It's a great car. On paper it's marginally slower than the 335d (0-62 5.2s vs 4.8s), but it feels pretty lively to me. There is less weight difference between the M340i and 840i GC than you might expect.

I would certainly take one over an X3, particularly a mid range 30d. I did try the X3MC as well but the ride was far too harsh and unforgiving for me.

I’ve gone for the GC. It’s being made at the moment and I have a provisional collection date of 1st March! Very excited! I was looking at X3 30d’s and m40i’s and also m340i tourings but the dealer contributions are so strong on the 8gc’s at the moment that it made the decision a no brainer.

Yesterday was new car day and it did not disappoint! What a car! I was a bit unsure buying the car without having test driven, or even sitting in one, but I’m so happy with it. It has been a good few years since I’ve had a brand new car too, loving that new car smell!
