Can a bumper with sensors be repainted?
I've heard conflicting information if a bumper can be repainted or not when it has sensors as part of advanced driving assistance package.
Does anyone have info on this? I had the rear bumper replaced on my M850i and it had to be repainted because of a poor paint match. Rob |

Somehow this is becoming an urban legend that you cannot paint a bumper with sensors. I'm not quite sure what people believe the solution would be if the bumper needed to be painted since a new bumper comes unpainted. A new car? Anyway, a proper paint job requires the bumper to be removed. Once removed, the sensors just snap out of little holders inside the bumper. A good painter will remove them because they have little gaskets around them, and also dirt will be trapped in there. You can have the sensors painted, but you don't need to.

The only part BMW suggests to not repaint are the PDC ultrasonic sensors (the small round ones). These are available in all factory colors through your BMW parts department. That said, I've heard of situations where body shops have painted them without any noticable issues.

It is the type of paint you must worry about... Some sensors are known to not work well with high metal paints.
