Automobile’s editors have chosen the BMW 8 Series coupe as our 2019 Design of the Year. There are multiple reasons for our selection, not least of which: In a year when all manufacturers tended to focus their efforts on an industry-wide consensual design approach, concentrating sales efforts on SUVs and reducing the diversity of passenger-car designs, an in-your-face car like this stands out.

Big, powerful, stylish coupes are wonderful things, traditionally pretty much the summit of any upper-level manufacturer’s product range. They’re even more impressive than convertibles on identical platforms because they’re always stiffer, lighter, and more crashworthy as well—not that anyone worries about such things in this market segment.

An interesting read and I'm very pleased with my M850, but the writer apparently has never seen the way I dress:

“...big coupes are extremely popular with the coterie of men and women who never go out in public less than impeccably and stylishly well turned out, and they always have been.”

I will venture to say if M850 Gran Coupe were available as well, it would be an even stronger contender.

I agree. It's beautiful. I'm going to have a tough time deciding between Coupe and Gran Coupe.

Based on whatever we've seen so far the coupe is better looking and better proportioned

I think BMW product planners have done a very good job offering a choice to both Coupe and Grand Coupe buyers. Choice is a wonderful thing.

2019 Design of the Year?

2019 Design of the Year?

The BMW 8 Series is nice, but just nice. Nowhere near as sexy as the Aston Martin Vantage.

Finally saw one in person. It's a stylish car but I'm still a tad underwhelmed. It's gotta have the right colors inside and out + good wheels to stand out IMO.

It's way better looking than this Aston Martin by a mile or two

I don't like the grille size growing on any other new model (especially the new 3 series), but it works really well here.
