Thanks,
Start in sport+, make sure the flaps a fully open by looking, if not just give a rev and they will open… while car is running with the flaps open pull the fuses… 2nd option is to use BimmerLink to open the flaps and pull the fuses…
Personally I have disconnected the plugs from the valve controllers instead of pulling the fuses

Starting the car and not even driving it but putting it into Sport Plus should definitely open the flaps after the two kickdowns from the cold start in RPMs. You can eyeball it to ensure the flaps are open and then pull the two fuses.

Once the flaps are locked into place then every cold start after that is loud as hell. Plus with 218 gone as well you get to truly hear the car which I didn't even understand until pulling 218 as I could still hear the exhaust regardless of the fabricated ASD nonsense. ASD gone and it's just pure glorious. 👍

So pulling it elimimates need to start in sport individual or makes it louder all around?

No no... I'm talking about the original post here the for the Sporty engine sound.

The drive mode is completely separate and done via the hard buttons on the console (comfort, sport, eco Pro and adaptive). You can always press the one you want before starting the car (default is comfort) and in my case Sport which remembers the last setting for it or toggles between Sport, Sport Plus or Individual). The other option is via Bimmercode to change the default start to what you want.

I'll add to this. If it's "Sporty" mode for engine sound I can tell you that is not available on my M850 vert. I have 11.2023 software. I bought it in Dec so that's how it was delivered.

I can also confirm that you can press the Sport button on the console before starting the car and it will remember your last Sport setting (Plus, Individual, etc).

Oh. I saw this after I replied to bloozeman. I have 11.2023 and I do not have Sporty sound setting. I have mine set to Depends on Driving Mode. But once again, I didn't do an update my car was delivered with 11.2023.

This ended up being pretty simple. I checked the flaps before I did anything. I saw they were closed. I also found the proper fuse (203). I entered the car and pressed Sport button on console to get it into Sport Plus mode. Then I started the engine and revved a few times. I pulled it out of my garage. I checked the flaps and they appeared to be fully open. I pulled the fuse. I turned the car off and confirmed the flaps stayed open.

I should also note, the sound is GLORIOUS! It doesn't matter which mode it's in (Sport, Comfort, etc.). It sounds great. ASD off, flaps always open is definitely the way to go.

Absolutely as in my ignorance I initially only pulled 203 for the flaps and enjoyed that as the wife got a kick out of ASD. For the record when she's with me in the car the B&W is at 20% best so I'd relish in the exhaust I could still hear and she'd get a kick out of the ASD.

As stated 218 will never see the light of day again as without it even in ECO Pro the exhaust sound (flaps open) beats the crap out of ASD. I call that out as when the wife is with me it's most often a long highway drive to San Diego to visit our son. There's a lot of boring stretches that equals DAP and ECO Pro (save some gas). But when we hit the winding mountain pass DAP off and Sport Individual for the win. 👍

Sporty if now gone is useless with ASD negated and the flaps open. Just use "depends on driving mode" and that will not impact the ECU fuel mixture with the car in Sport, Sport Plus or a Sport Individual setting.

I believe that is correct. I believe mine is the same & I do not have the option for the Sport sound. Now that I've had the car tuned, I won't be seeing it return without replacing parts. :/

Awesome Post!
Thanks everyone for your helpful comments.
I've followed all steps above & it was pretty easy.
Downloaded the fuse map, & pulled fuse 203 (far left upside down 7.5) & fuse 206 (upside down 10 just right of 203).
Sounds great!

What year is your M850? Another member upgraded his 2022 to 11/2023.50 and still has the Sporty feature. BMW probably changed the ECU unit on the 2024 models and removed this feature completely!

Could you please verify that you have 11/2023.50 installed? As you see from this post, there are still some members claiming that the Sporty feature in the iDrive is gone from their menu completely. I'm wondering if this is something BMW did with the 2024 models and is not a software update!

So 11/2023.50 may nuke "sporty" from the engine sound settings but the key being with 218 and 203 (plus 206 for a M8) pulled it's no loss whatsoever as "depends on driving mode" is king to begin with. Even a remote start with the flaps open in default comfort is glorious. Want to make that always Sport Individual, Sport or Sport Plus and Bimmercode to the rescue.

Absolutely nobody should be concerned with the loss of "sporty" and when I have the M850i in for service and ask for the latest/greatest iDrive release which my dealer always does when asked I'll still be grinning regardless. 👍

When you remove the fuses, no error messages on the iDrive!

Turns out I was incorrect. I could have sworn that was gone but, I just found it. My car is a 2020 and the last update was in 2021. I now have to make it clear to the dealer not to flash the system since it is tuned.
