Farmers Insurance Signal App

Anyone using Farmers signal App to get a discount on the auto policy , does it only track distractions or the app tracks driving habits. I am ok with tracking distractions as i never text and drive but not fine with tracking aggressive driving under hard acceleration or braking.

It tracks:
  • Phone use
  • Heavy braking
  • Excessive speed
  • Number of miles driven
  • Time of day (e.g., rush hour, late night)
Basically stay the hell away from this.

I think all those insurance company devices track acceleration, speed and braking.

Yep , my agent was pushing me to install the app to get 10% discount but i sensed it was not good for spirited driving.

thanks for your response

Progressive tried pushing this on me also. We don't use the info to raise your rates, just to offer a discount. And when you say no thank you, they try and pull you out. Why don't you want it? Do you brake often? Uhhh, do you see where I live? I commute from NY to NJ everyday. Ever driven in NY? Yes, I brake often. Crickets - case closed.

Agree, I will continue to pay extra to try to maintain any modicum of privacy I still have left. When I saw car insurance companies wanting to plug into the ODB2 port of our cars to "save" us money, I knew that was all BS. They want to know more about you and sell that info or use it against you.

10% for me is like $70 a year. No thanks. Not worth giving up my info for.

I will say, the safe co program seems pretty good so I gave it a try on cars I don’t drive (wife’s daily suv and wife’s slk)

Their program only requires you to use the device for 3 months to determine your driving habits. After that you get the discount and send the device back.

SLK ended with a 28% discount out of possible 30% but we rarely drive it. Daily only got an 8% discount because it is driven a bit more.

I think it was worth it for us to try it.

You only pay $700/yr? That’s good but insurance in South Florida is a lot higher.

That’s pretty incredible for a full year. I pay $2,100 on my M4 and I’m not even in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale. Collision coverage alone is $600+.

I think I am paying just under $1800 full coverage for all four cars with a $1k deductible.

Those are some great rates. I’m in a Palm Beach County FL suburb and pay $3,795 / year for full coverage on my M4 and wife’s 2012 Q5 with Liberty Mutual. Clean driving records. Rates increase double digits every year so we end up needing to price it elsewhere every year. It was $3K / year a couple of years ago. Deductibles are $500 but changing to $1,000 doesn’t move needle much. I looked into the tracking device but reviews seemed to indicate it didn’t save anywhere as much as people expected and often not at all so I didn’t bother.

Sometimes you just need to have the conversation with your insurance company to review your rates/policy. Progressive tried to give me some ridiculous increase a few years back. I called them and asked why my rates were going up so much for someone in my age category with no claims and a perfect record. They gave me the bla bla bla expenses are going up. I told them I didn't like changing insurance companies but I already got another quote and would be leaving. The next thing I know, they are reevaluating my policy and gave me a huge reduction. I was happy but pissed at the same time. Why did I have to ask?

You had to ask for the same reason DirectTV continues to send you bills and late notices and extra fees after you cancel service and why you ISP arbitrarily gives out teaser rates and then increases your rates until you call to complain.

Yeah I did during last year's renewal and it saved a lot vs. a ridiculous increase initially invoiced. This year, they wouldn't budge and both Progressive and Geico were about the same for the same coverage. I stuck with LM in part because it is an annual renewal whereas most insurers are 6-month renewals, with an opportunity to increase rates again in 6 mos.

I know someone who works as an insurance agent and they told me to avoid these devices like the plague not to mention most of their apps tend to suck.

So...
  • Phone use - Yes
  • Heavy braking - All the time
  • Excessive speed - Yes, ask the VA State Police
  • Number of miles driven - 170 per day
  • Time of day (e.g., rush hour, late night) all of them

LOL, they'd jack my rates off the chart.

I have one of the big three. Keep in mind I drive in total over 40,000 miles a year. 33,000 to work and 7,000 bumming around on the weekends. I recently added a E46 330cic to my fleet. Called my insurance agent, she reviewed my whole policy and asked how many mile were on the Z4, which at the time was 99,500. She said "oh we can discount that some" ended up saving $60 year just on the Z4. Told her the miles on the E90, but I dropped to collision anyway, and added the E46. My premium went up about $180 for the year for adding a 3rd BMW.

I've been with the same company for 30 some years and they've never raised my rates. I've had 5 deer hits in 13 years and one dog attack (on the E90) - yes deer strikes don't count against collision, but still, the insurance company could pull some shenanigans if they wanted. I even moved to a new state and dropped my home insurance with the company.
