Electronic oil level sensor is a great idea. REMOVING the dipstick and relying solely on the electronic oil level sensor is a stupid one.

What you guys haven't realized yet is, it's a Connected subscription service. After a 12 month trial period, if you don't buy a $99 annual "Connected Dipstick" service fee, BMW will disable your "Active Dipstick" function.

My 1998 M3 has both a dipstick and electronic sensor. BMW knew back then.

Something happened.

I will reserve my perspective until I can see a real production car and engine diagrams on realoem.com with part numbers.

Literally hard to believe ...

hell yeah, they need to bring back the dipstick.

Wait until your oil level sensor goes bad, then you'll want a dipstick lol

ive lost count the amount of times ive underfilled due to slow electronic sensor readings

Actually BMW claimed it was for emissions purposes which is so stupid if true.

Changing the oil on my E90 M3 is so frustrating.

We might not like it, but I bet the oil level sensor has saved a lot of engines. I know a lot of people who NEVER check their oil.

As an engineer, I believe you could design a much faster and better sensor than they are using. Probably costs more than $0.10 though.
The oil level sensor is not the problem and no one had an issue with a sensor to tell you it's low on oil. The stupidity came with getting rid of the dipstick. If the sensor failed you had no way to validate it. You were told to park the car and get it towed. I had it happen to me just before going on trip to monument valley. The sensor is a great idea but relying solely on it was "best case engineering". I agree put a sensor in it even with a dipstick. Oil is too important. You also have to run the car for five minutes when cold and all sorts of nonesense. Getting rid of the dipstick was a stupid idea closely followed by getting rid of the spare tire. Again best case engineering. I saw a documentary last night about jets having 3 separate hydraulic systems. If bmw designed it they would put a single system with no gauge. You would have to go through 7 layers of menus to see your ass is done because hydraulic fluid leaked out from the crappy plastic hydraulic fluid reservoir. : )

The most thing is not having a dip stick. With if I'm low a quart or half a quart of oil before hitting the track or something? It just never made sense....

Nothing wrong with both options.

E92 M3 ....For a precise measurement and display of oil level, it is necessary that the engine be at operating temperature, and level checked after uninterrupted driving for approximately 6.2 miles (10km).

that's why many of us would like an actual dipstick and a digital guage ...

Honestly, having a dipstick and an electrical sensor seems logical. I owned an N52 for 6 years and really the only time I wish I had it was after oil changes. Although, due to the lack of dipstick I was always worried and pretty much checked my oil level every drive. I do also recall reading that the sensor cuts out at 186k miles or 300k kilometers but I wasn't sure if it was true. I only hit 122 before it was totaled
