Question Whats a realistic timeframe for getting a 2022 M8?

I have a 5 month old M4 with ~6k miles, but with used car values being so high I am loosely considering selling/trading it in on a new M8. If I was to do such a thing, what is a realistic timeframe to be able to actually get the car considering my dealer getting an allocation and then ordering/building with the current chip issues? I'm assuming maybe Spring?

Getting a solid Allocation seems more the task. The options added such as individual colors or interiors. I would guess 4 months minimum.

4 months sounds fast, although also would be just in time to sit in my garage for the winter. I do want the B&W, but not much else as far as options go. I have an individual color on my M4 but for what I'd already be spending on an M8 could go stock.

I ordered Individual color with B&W and was told 4 -6 Months. My order was first week Sept. So far it looks like mid Oct build slot No delay at this point.

I heard there were delays with the B&W. Hopefully yours will push through on schedule. So when do you expect to get the car given that time frame? I guess November. What color are you getting? I'd still have to get an allocation and who knows how long that will take given that my dealer never seems very motivated.

Here is my order post: https://f92.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1856409

I was told take the typical 3 months of build and add 10 weeks for individual. But since today shortages expect 4 - 6 months and then add the 10 weeks.

I'm confused on the individual thing. I was told with my car to add 2 weeks or so for the individual paint. My CA told me that's because they have to take the car completely out of the assembly line to an entirely different place to paint it. Sounded plausible I suppose. Potentially maybe it added some time in the very beginning before the car was built? I don't know about the delays with that part but once the car started being built it proceeded through everything at what appeared to be normal speed. It breezed through the paint booth dots on the website definitely with no extra delay. I think it moved several dots through the paint booth in one day. I've tried to find out how the individual paint process works and most recently from my Spartanburg plant tour they told me that really they just swap out the paint colors in the regular booth and paint the car and that there is nothing different done. I asked a few of the different geniuses on different phone calls and got mixed answers. Some of them seem to have more of a clue than others. That's as official of information as I can find so far. So I'm not sure overall about the delay on individual stuff. But I'm not sure why it would add 10 weeks

Here was my timeline including the individual paint..

For the plants in Germany they do remove it. The M8 is built in the "primum plant" it's known for some of the highest quality work from BMW. Individual colors are mostly hand painted and finished by hand, more of an old school process. They are ran in the line up to primer and taken off to be painted, corrected and finished. I actually been to the plants to see this in Germany. If you look BMW individual webpage says add 10weeks for process (probably playing it safe).

It all really depends on how many ahead of you and the timing of it all. I've heard some individual orders being done in 4 weeks on the dot but then took 3 weeks to get to the dealer. The time I was there the gentleman in charge of painting has been doing it for 34 years at that same booth. He was teaching about 6 others at that time all in different stages of apprenticeship.

The Spartanburg plant does not remove to hand paint individual colors FYI.

My brother's one, ordered at the end of january, delivered at the end of may.

Now I think you have to wait at least 6 months.

Yea, I've seen that page, but like I said, it seemed to add no time to my M4 for the individual paint. I see the M8 is built in Dingolfing vs Regensburg for the M4. Perhaps the processes are different between the to factories. I have seen some videos on the process with the hand painting. I was still at a loss for how that fit into my timeline.

Yeah I think you nailed it right there. It might be because of the factory. They may have a much newer process that allows for the quick paint switch to individual colors.

The paint thing never quite made sense to me. If they are going to take it out and hand paint it that's one thing for hopefully some higher quality, but since they don't batch paint cars on the mainline I never understood why they wouldn't just insert the individual color in between with the rest. White car, blue car, hot pink car, white car, black car...

Some of the colors have to actually be hand done due to the process it has. I'm guessing BMW gives a 10 week range to cover their butts, and as a customer you would be like wow it was only adding 1 week not 10 now I'm super happy. But pick the color that needs to be done by hand that 10 weeks might be real.

Added Video for good watch.

My CA told me they have to put it in the order bank, approx 2-4 months + delivery time, approx 4-6 months all together.

So they don't have any allocation then? ooof, maybe find another dealer with allocation?

Apparently not currently. I figure though that if I was able to put in an official order today that maybe it would get here just in time to sit in the garage for 3 months during the Ohio winter. So if it arrives in late December or the beginning of April I'll probably still get about the same amount of driving out of it. And it gives me some more time to save up for the downpayment anyway. Only downside is that I should sell my M4 now to take advantage of the market. I don't know how it'll be in December.

Depending on dealers volume is allocation allotments from I've been explained. Only 1 dealer in all of Houston had an allocation when I wanted to build and they held it tight. They ended up trading an m5cs and my sedan for it for me to get allocation.

I ordered from my local dealer sep 1. My car just went to production today and I would estimate might be here to Dallas by December or so. I did not order special paint or the BW. It started production earlier than stated. My build date was supposed to be week 42 or mid October. It started week 39. Fingers crossed for Christmas!

Find one on a dealer's lot——I did. So turnaround time was 3 hours.

Sarcasm aside: many are orders already customer allocated but, sometimes, they fall through.

Best of luck!

At least you can drive it in the winter in Texas. Not so much in Ohio.
