I can't tell if these new "ultimate driving machine" disappointments will eventually hurt sales. Right now sales is running off the reputation built decades ago. The bmw line up around 2000 was epic from a drivers standpoint and maybe the pinnacle of the company. With all cars being fairly lifeless, it's such a great opportunity for bmw to stamp down its authority. Instead bmw is just always a step behind Benz.

I don't understand, the prototype had steering feel according to Car and Driver, why would they get rid of it?!!?? Also saw that the M850i will be on the Grand Tour, should be interesting...

I feel like the interior of the 8 series was designed pre-X5/3 Series?? It is so much worse! I don't get it

While I agree that sometimes people live in a cloud when they think about old cars, they always say dont drive your hero cars because they will disappoint, but the E39 M5 does not disappoint.

Not sure you ever drove one but its definitely not a pile of dung.

It's the right thing to do. You know it, I know it, everyone knows it. Do the right thing, BMW.
I read somewhere that BMW preferred the V8 for the M cars due to weight distribution concerns.

Although porsche's always have trick suspension, I'd bet that the M850i would be more comfortable and refined as well. When you say it as "1100 pounds of weight just to fit golf clubs", it's easy to dismiss the actual purpose of the 8 series. However let's say you want to do a cross country trip with your SO, the utility and comfort of the 8 series would be much better suited for the task than the 911. This is really the purpose of all GT cars and why they are fundamentally different than sports cars; lots of power, big space, and style.
Of course you're right. And the 8's purpose is to be a GT. But I still wish a company with BMW's DNA would build a sports car.

I also have to say that BMW never wants to admit that they're building GTs ("no, no, the 8 doesn't compete with the S-Class coupe"). It almost feels like they're embarrassed to be building the cars that they are.
I have a 760whp M3, I don't see how BMW hasn't built a sports car.

It can go toe to toe with a 720s, even if it's tuned, then swap tunes and dominate on a track — it seats 4 adult sized humans and has 4 doors.

Don't know why you're bitching about a car that is in a far different class than their actual sports car...

Aside from the 7-series and soon-to-be-replaced F30 3-series I don't believe BMW trails Mercedes in any segment, especially from a driving perspective.

With that being said, I couldn't agree more that BMW is just living off its reputation and the public is loving it. The early '00s was the golden era but BMW was still pumping out drivers' cars until the end of that decade. The neutering of BMW began in 2009 with the E89 Z4 and F10 5er. Both were shitty excuses for BMWs symbolized the brand new Audi-like approach to "performance." BMW died when the E90 3er and E84 X1 departed.

If you want a sports car, get an M4. It's much cheaper and has far better performance.
The ///M4 isn't even that much a sports car to be honest. There's an eerily distinct difference between it and the E9X M3. The latter felt lively and communicated to the driver. The M4 feels like a numb luxo-barge.

Well, I fall somewhere in between you two.

My M4 is stock/non-CP and it's an incredible car for me. It cost half what my Porsche cost, and provides 8/10ths of the performance. Measured bang-for-the-buck, my M4 is superior to my 911 GTS. The two cars are equally fast, but as I've said before, performance does not equal only 0-60. And the 911's steering and handling characteristics are hands down superior to the M4's.

BMW has talked about building a 911-fighter and they certainly have the engineering talent to do it, but we're all in agreement that the 8 is not that car and isn't intended to be. I wish it or another BMW was. If that's bitching, then so be it.

Great looking car. At first sight I had a few doubts, but now as I have seen it in real life I am in love. Seems like a very nice GT car for a reasonable price. Can't wait for the M8 - if it drives anything like the M5, it will be the real deal.

I think that's right. A nice car, but nothing more than that. I will say that if I was in the market for this sort of car, I would buy it over the Merc. It's subjective, but I think the Merc is slightly better looking and its interior is more inspired, but the 8 is a better handling car at a much better price point.

That could be the new M2CS, coming to you late next year.

The 8 series is a lot more like a 2 door Panamera than a 911. Perhaps you or I could drive any variant of the 911 no matter how track focused all across the country and actually enjoy it, but the target demographic for a car like the 8 wouldn’t.

So the question is, would they pay a 100% premium for a DB11 or take the 8? BMW is betting that many of them will take the 8, and that it will hopefully attract some new type of buyer looking for something more swoopy than a 7 or some S class. This is a minuscule market in any case, hence the high price to make it financially viable.

If I had to pick from this range, I would no doubt go for the M8GC.

+1 . I feel there has been a spark missing, especially when things started going turbo.

I tend to think of the brands as complimentary by design, as they only compete directly with SUVs. BMW takes a GT approach with the M850i and Z4 to the focused 911 and Boxster, while offering aggressive M3/M4 and M5 models in segments where Porsche does not compete.

Buyers can order one from column P and one from column B: pair a 911 with a 5-series, an M850i with a Cayenne GTS, an M4 with a Panamera.

Not sure why BMW feels the need to make this car or other cars in their lineup that have such limited appeal/ potential buyers?? This must generate a lot more profit than I think it will.

I don't think this car captures the awesomeness of the original 8 Series coupe from the 1990s. That car might not have been the best performing model or be the most all inclusive package, but loved the sleek design.
