Simply basing it off of ALL past/previous renderings followed by actual production models in (recent) BMW history. Let's hope this is the first!

The biggest (and most disappointing) change is how much higher the grill sits comapred to the 8er Concept.
It's baffling why they're moving away from the Hoffmeister kink--it's one of the core traits of BMW design. Cover the kidney grills and it could just be an Infiniti. Think the company is fumbling with the design direction. |

Unfortunately I don't think the production car will look that good.
Base on those spy photos leaked you get to know the 8 series will look like a longer bigger 4 series, and not to mention that a production car will have a squeezed thinner bumper so the presence will not be anything better than your great rendering.

The Hoffmeister kink is a staple of BMW design as are many elements of design, icons if you will that are being interpreted by other manufacturers. Walking around the Geneva Auto Show there were many models that "interpreted" these icons. Double Halo headlights,L shaped rearlights, air breathers and many more but yes the Hoffmeister kink is another element. Infiniti is a good example. With many BMW elements drawn over with a compass. The new design direction for BMW is more cleaner and crisper. In The 8. This is clear as is the forthcoming models all utilise these more original design elements to BMW at least.

You need the license plate, otherwise it would not be road legal (in Germany at least) ;-)

I would guess the production vehicle will have black window trim as usual with M models. It would be nice to have a choice between black and chrome though for a sporty/stealth look or a more classy/bourgeois look, and the M8 GC Concept does look great with that bright window trim.
The only M car I've ever seen with chrome window trim is an F10 M5. Actually I'm pretty sure it was the Aluminium Line Individual (more of a brushed effect) option that could be ordered on the regular F10 5 Series, but I don't know if the option was also available on the M5 or if that was some sort of special order. The trend at BMW seems to be black window trim (matte black or gloss black Shadowline) on all M-related products: M Sport, M Performance (even though all the other bits and bobs are Cerium Gray), and seemingly M unless an Individual option I'm unaware of allows for Aluminium Line. Funny enough Audi is now following the same trend by offering the option for blacked out window trim, grille and side mirrors on its sportier models, while the RS models have long had that shouty look with bright chrome trim against a bright (usually red) body. I notice how low Tesla hood lines are on the Model S and Model 3. Clearly a huge benefit not having to leave room for such a large power plant. |

Pedestrian impact doesn't necessarily outright ban low grills or a low front, because it's more about the relation of the front and how it slopes into the hood so that people don't get their heads slammed into the latter. Yes, ped impact laws do hurt design--take the F30--grill it pretty low, but from the side you can see how the hood awkwardly rises up pretty quickly, as opposed to gradually rising. Still think it's beautiful, but it's a necessary compromise. Nor does engine placement necessitate a higher front. Can always put a bulge at the top for clearance like the M3, or worse yet, add more front overhang (the overhang on the E31 is pretty long after all). |

Love the car. Just what I'd get for my next car. Except the joining kidney grills. Can't stand it. Yuk!

Looks decent, just not a fan of the overly busy front bumper design language BMW M is going with these days. Its probably why I feel the black render looks the best of them all.

I still think the front air intakes are just way too big! But otherwise, this car looks very good...
